You can't actually achieve true 1x through a lens. It just looks really close to it. It's normal.

I have the African. For the price the glass is pretty decent. The 1X is extremely close to a true 1X. I don't need or want the exposed turrets, but if you do go for it. Preference in retcles is personal, and if you're not shooting past 200 yds you will probably be fine. I called Nikon and asked for a plain black turret cover to replace the goofy golden water buffalo item, they sent it out to me free of charge.
