According to Paul in this thread, we're looking at .750" under the FSB.

Many people shows a 0.625" gas block in their catalog, but not many actually have them in stock.

But if Paul at BCM said that the diameter under the FSB is 0.75", then you can just about use any brand of gas block. The 0.75" is readily available.

IIRC this is exactly what he said in the other thread was the reason for the .750". It was a conscious decision to allow the end user more flexibility.

Which makes me wonder why we have so many threads on this anyway.

So, the barrel is just a pencil barrel? The rest of the upper is the typical BCM upper? How will a pencil barrel hold up for strings of sustained fire? Is it something you would want to run through a strenuous course of fire, or is it more for target shooting and a few hundred rounds here and there? Also, with a free floated rail system it wouldnt so much matter what you put on here as it would have no impact on the barrel correct? You just wouldnt benefit from the pencil barrel im guessing. At most, i usally add some XTM panels and a good light along with BUIS and a sling.

pencil barrel with a .750 gas block (for parts availability reasons). Pencil should be fine for semi auto shooting. The barrel will heat up faster due to less metal but it does cool down faster because of less metal. The M16A1 was pencil barrel even.

My (wife's) upper showed up today. I don't know what all the fuss is about with the taper pins. Maybe it's all an inside joke, maybe Starting Strength has given me super human strength, maybe Paul's getting soft on us DIY-ers, who knows. I gently clamped the upper down on my bench, front sight tower on the new Brownells block, wacked the pins 4 times each with a 3/32" nailset & 20oz hammer & the job was done.

All the talk about these pins being a pain to get out had me kicking myself when I saw that Bravo Company is offering the upper with the 11" VTAC rail installed for $625.

Now I just need to wait for the rest of the parts to show up.

mine came in today, messed around, definately feels a lot lighter. I put it on my A2 stocked lower to get an estimate on the weight feel. Cav Arms lower will be 1 lbs lighter. Definitely moves the center of mass towards the shooter.

The portion of barrel under the handguard is still govt profile with some extra milled off behind the front sight tower. Is this the normal way lightweight barrels are machined? The area of the barrel in front of the sight tower is the .625" I think. Its thinner than the govt profile part. I guess under the handguard it might be too weak to make this .625" also.
