    Now a scope

Now that I have my rifle picked out could use help with optics. What I want to do with the rifle is for now target shooting. My ignorance of the M4 is still a little green. What is the farthest distance are they good to 100,200,300 yards? I guess pending on that distance would help identify the scope need. Do you go with a red dot that type of thing? Pending on how good I get with it maybe I'll venture into competition. So based on these criteria where would I begin or how would I select a scope? I am looking to stay at about $300 mounts included. Thanks

For your stated uses and experience I would say a "quality" RDS or HWS now the problem is that you want an optic and mount for $300 or less. Even the older C3 model aimpoints go for around $400, you can find sales if you look around but in reality you are looking in the $500-$600 for a quality optic of the RDS HWS variety. There are cheaper optics out there but better to buy once that buy twice.

Read the stickied thread titled: "Optics for Self Defense and CQB: My thoughts and experiences."

In the world of optics, you get what you pay for. The cheapest Aimpoint I would buy, the CompC3 mentioned above, can be found with a good useable mount for about $465.

To answer your question about "the farthest distance are they good to," an M4 can be "good" out to 500 - 600 yards, if you can shoot that well. If you think you are capable of this, you may want to read the stickied thread titled: "1-4 Variable optic options."

Thanks, yea I know your right you get what you pay for. Don't know if I can shoot past 200 yards never had a gun or scope capable of anything past 200 yards. I am going to hold off and look into the Aimpoints but, they don't look like they have magnification. I really would like a Trijicon. Let me ask you another question can you put a magnifying scope together with a red dot system? I am new at this so please excuse my ignorance. Don't know if I need both. I want to able to shoot competition matches after the proper training of course.

Look at the rifle on the middle of the home page:

I use a Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 10X with mildot reticle on my carbine. I have used this scope for target shooting out to 500 yds. Cost is about $220.

It works for 100M on out for me.
