props to the op. Thanks for the story bud.
I don't recall saying anything about the OP - I responded to PdxMotoxer who said he'd bet money that all of us have done something like this before. I have not and don't foresee it happening to me because I generally flex my mind muscle before I flex my other ones...

The OP's story was amusing and if it serves as a warning to other, great! I was merely pointing out that it was not accurate to just lump all of us into that category.

Titling your thread "To XYZ or Not to XYZ" will cause me to completely ignore your thread.

i thoroughly enjoyed the story, OP. please post pics when you get a chance.

if you didn't crush the barrel, you could very easily have it cut down and re-threaded to save for an SBR.

oh geez, one of the few times i forget to put "almost everybody" someone who has
NEVER striped anything or broken anything jumps in to call me out.

    I'm truly sorry CaptainDooley.
I meant to say i would bet $$ that "almost everyone" who owns a pair of vice grips has at least one story of stripping the hella out of something or breaking
a bolt off or worse a sparkplug.
Then added a wink as in you know.... JOKING.

if I unduly "lumped" you somehow into some group while joking then again i am sorry i offended you so bad.

I figured out a long time ago that I didn't inherit my father's mechanical abilities. This has relegated me to using pre-assembled uppers and lowers (preferably by BCM). I think that in the long run I've actually saved a lot of money going this way. YMMV

When I clicked on this thread I was expecting to read about a Bushmaster being shot to destruction.

    What a disappointment.

Not to be an ass but why didn't you simply look to see if the izzy was spot welded and grind that small portion off. If I remember correctly simple solder isn't classified as permenant so it would have had a weld to remove then it should have been smooth sailing.

The method knowledge and proper tools makes all the difference in the world.

Well, as lessons go, this one happens on a fairly regular basis.

As I understand it, you could have cut the cut the flash suppressor in a couple spots and it wouldn't have been an issue. It is time consuming, but not not hard.
One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.

1200 degree silver solder is an approved method. a bad one, but approved. the simple fact he was able to twist it off period makes me think that MIGHT have been the method.. a properly pinned muzzle device will not twist off, no matter how long a breaker bar you use
