    Point missed.

It's not about being against the A4, never has been. That's silly. Like anything else, the A4 is a performer that has it's place, but could stand some configuration development and is not the answer to everything. Nor is a 6.8 AR. Nor is a 7.62 AR.

It's about gross technical misconceptions about the ACTUAL performance envelope of the M4 configuration and the inability or unwillingness of atavistic-minded military leadership to make themselves aware of the real capabilities of their own weapons systems, THEN talk about them in a public venue where their subordinates who know better can hear them shove their entire foot in their sewer.

Kinda like that moron congressman talking about tipping Guam over with too many people. Metaphorical or not, he looked and sounded like an idiot, whether he is or not.

All I know is that he was 100% wrong with everything he was quoted with in the OP.

It seems that some people here understand what exactly the problem is and some people don't. It isn't about whether an M4 or M16A4 is better, if a fixed or collapsible stock is better, or if a 20" or 14.5" barrel is better. Not everyone has to have an M4 and not everyone has to have an M16A4. Maybe some can have an M4 and some can have an M16A4. Maybe they all can have a newer varient of an M16 or even a different weapon system. Why have a modular weapon and pretend like there are only two options for what you can have?
Are <20" barrel is significantly less lethal in combat? Are butt strokes necessary or are collapsible stocks not up to it? Are collapsible stocks are significantly less reliable than rifle stocks? I'd say no. Do people care more about D&C than combat effectiveness? Do people care more about tradition than combat effectiveness? Is compactness sometimes more important than muzzle velocity? Is the way the weapon fits the shooter more important than the ability to butt stroke someone? Are muzzle pokes more effective than butt strokes while using a sling? I'd say yes.
It has nothing to do with funding and everything to do with idiots. Luckily, soldiers and Marines are able to use whatever they are given just well enough to get the job done. If choices in rifles, equipment, and training made more sense the soldiers and Marines would be much more effective. Some people shouldn't be making the decisions they are making.

Exactly. Get rid of the looped sling crap, more gunfighting. More PT and small unit training as well.

It is all about funding, if there was unlimited funding there wouldn't be an issue.

Hell, if all of us here had unlimited funding we would all own multiple top tier rifles.

I hear you, I just didn't articulate it that way.

WHOA! I wish I could say that's the nuttiest thing I've seen tried, but that's pretty out there....jeezy petes...

Slightly related, ask me someday about freakin' periscopes and the money that got metaphorically set on fire over those things.

You actually just stated my primary fret WAY better than I did. That horror that occurs when you get the Butterfly Effect combined with the Congressional Good Idea Fairy that happens, whether intentionally or not, because somebody forgets to bring their edit button with them. *shudder*

I REALLY don't want to see us getting knocked by two steps by subcommittee decree, after we've spent all this time since 2001 clawing our way forward as the Clinton generals retired, as the institutional inertia got overcome by circumstance, and as the Lances of OIF 1 become the Sgts and SSgts (and sometimes even Captains!) of now.

    They deserve better.

It is much better to work with a GOBI than a C-GIF. At least with the General Officer Bright Idea, generally ...you can tactfully wrap reality around the GOBI and come out with something that helps the L/Cpl.

C-GIF....forget it, the civilians are in charge of the military and their authority, from their perspective is not to be questioned!!!......There is no way to convince the Hill that the military may understand the problem and have a better solution.

I agree with you, bro, but that quote isn't the only thing he's ever done or said. That's all I was getting at.

Isn't Conway the guy who won't let Marines fill up their POVs in cammies?
