    recommended magnification

What magnification should I be looking at for shooting groups from the bench and prone at distances of 100 and 200 yds out of a 16" bbl stainless Noveske/Larue etc with 75gr ammo?

If your only criteria is shooting groups from stable positions, I'd look for something with the highest magnification possible that allows you to resolve the smallest aiming points possible. Such as the Leupold Competition line in the 25-45 power range.

As a note, the higher magnification will really make it hard if you want to do any other kind of shooting.

Yeah I went with a fixed 10x mildot because of that. (Bushnell 3200 Elite)

Price was a factor as well. 10X made sense though for scale purposes.

Otherwise I'd get myself a first focal plane mildot that goes from 6-25x for example.

OK thanks guys. I liked the idea of a 2.5-10 or so but thought it might be hard to see even at 10x if shooting groups, but I liked the idea of being able to dial down to 2.5x and shoot offhand. I do have 2 ARs with Aimpoints so I really shouldn't need another AR to shoot offhand with for awhile. I was also thinking 3.5-15ish might be nice.

3-9 or 2.5-10 are good all around scopes for that range.

The higher power scopes will allow you to see your groups without using a spotting scope.

I'm a long way from having the cash but I was looking at the Nightforce 2.5-10, IOR 2.5-10 or 2-12, U.S. Optics 1.8-10. $1500 max including mount/rings. I've seen the USO for $1300ish from Rainier and also seen it for $2k. I don't know why. Am I spending too much for my intended purpose and distance? I'll be saving a long time to get one of these scopes. Burris and Leupold are lower on my wish list but Burris is more affordable.

Those are professional level scopes which are great if you are using them in that role or competing in 3-gun, etc. I wouldn't compare a Burris or Leupold to them but they still make a pretty nice scope.

I got a Burris TAC30 3-9x for Christmas. The clarity is impressive, and I like the BallisticPlex reticle, but I have not finished the build it is going on so I can't give you a range review just yet.
