I paint everything lightest to darkest. I use whatever I can get my hands on that's local foliage to use as a stencil, mostly because it's everywhere and will break up the outline regardless. This was done with pine straw.
Paint the entire rifle tan, then randomly lay down pine straw. Add small bursts of green, then bursts of brown to fill in anywhere that needs it. To make the lines more distinct/sharper, simply spray with the can closer to the rifle. To give it a more faded/blended shade, then spray with the can further away.
