How good is the Magpul DVD at actually teaching?

It gets the basics down, and introduces you to some tactics. Talks about mindset, equipment, and gives you some scenarios.
At teaching, they do a pretty good job of breaking everything down. Definitely something good to watch before you head to your training class. With a their method in mind, you can then ask questions that may pop up during the training class about why the teacher does it the way he does, compare the effectiveness of both methods, and incorporates what works and makes sense to you into how you handle your gun.
It isn't a live class, but it is very in depth and very useful at least for me as a reasonable seasoned shooter.
Hard to say how it would pertain to a total novice it might be overwhelming. But given a few viewings you will clearly gain more knowledge than the 'average' gun owner posses.
Good if for the drills alone but comes with the caveat that if you 'are doing it wrong' it is just bad muscle memory.
I'd try to plan on making time for a class within a year or sooner.
FWIW...
We have gotten quite a few DVD-viewers at our practice night that have zero other training. It's a mixed bag. Some understand that all they've done is watch a video and work on making what they "learned" work for them. Others cling steadfastly to bits and pieces of what they learned even though other parts of their technique or system clash with what they are trying to do. Like the guy with a short handguard and his elbow jutted out horizontal to the ground but his feet placed all wrong his shoulders square to the target and his stock fully collapsed. Some of them understand when you say "pick one way" and show them how to make that way work for them, others just cling to what they think they know and proceed to spend all night ****ing with a half-asses stance they "learned" from a video and in the meantime failing to grasp mechanical offset of the sighting system and never come close to, you know, actually hitting the target.![]()
I understand that its just a video. I', just curious if it is worth getting before I actually take a class. I know a guy here who is a certified handgun instructor and I'm going to get his help. I'm not going to him for help with drills or the like, just basic marksmanship/grip/stance. If I'm doing this should I still get the video?
