    Carrier Replacement

Of course, after you've put a good number of rounds through an AR, it's not a good idea to seperate the Bolt and the barrel extenstion/chamber that have got to know each other well and have worked in (unless the bolt breaks). What about the bolt carrier? Is it a bad idea to replace the carrier? Is seperating an upper and carrier a bad idea after they've worked in? Will it effect anything? I have about 1K rounds through an AR that I'm considering swaping out the BC.

I just got a complete EXO Coated (FailZero) BCG from Spikes. I was going to use it on a new build, but I'm thinking of replacing the carrier with the new EXO coated one I just got. Could this cause any issues?

PS: I'm really interested to know if this could cause accuracy or function issues. Please don't post something like "fancy finishes are crap, forget the EXO." etc. Thanks.

There is no reason to swap the BCG. Aside from a failure of the carrier key, it will probably last a lifetime.

I agree with Iraqgunz. The carrier should last a lifetime unless the key breaks. Of course regular maintenance is required to remove the buildup of carbon in the carrier.

Dropping in a new carrier is fine and should not create any issues. Interchangeability of parts is needed for mil type weapons- of course working under the assumption of in-spec, quality parts. As correctly stated earlier, bolt carriers rarely need to be replaced due to wear. However, I have swapped out a few older non-shrouded carriers for full profile shrouded ones.

FWIW, the Spike's Tactical nickel-boron coating is different than FZ's.

Bolt group coatings are just a big waste of money at any "% of nickel or boron or something". About as affective as painting the backside of drywall...

    Disregard my comments about Spike's.

It was a previous coating. All current nickel-boron finish BCG's they sell are done by FailZero.

    Based on what?

There are more important things to spend money on in an AR15

If you were constantly operating in a maritime saltwater environment, I would say a coating on the BCG would be fine but otherwise...
