Lost my licence today...for something 8 years ago in FL!

I got pulled over today for not having my tags current. The officer (CHPD) was very professional and I have no complaint against him.

However, apparently the State of North Carolina saw it fit to suspend my license for 3 months starting in March because of a speeding ticket I got in St. Lucie County (FL) in.......2002!!!!! WTF?! Oh, and I did not receive one single piece of mail from the DMV or the State. Believe me, I would have taken care of this if I had known!

Isn't there some sort of statute of limitations in NC? This certainly surprised me, as I expected to get a warning, but instead got my license taken on the spot. Luckily my GF was in the car and could drive home.

So, after receiving 2 tickets when I expected a warning, I will be contacting my attorney.

    Wise man.
If you aren't armed when you take a dump in your own home then your opinion on what is a practical daily carry weapon isn't interesting to me.

That funny North Carolina put a DNR hold on my licence for not paying a $50 fine for something that happened when I was stationed at Ft. Bragg in 1991. I guess the law has a looooong arm and a looooooong memory, a lot better than mine.

There have also been cases where old, and paid ,traffic tickets have suddenly become "unpaid" to the state and bench warrants are issued, with no notice sent to the person who incurred the original ticket. So, save your receipts from paying tickets/ fines...you may need them one day...

I could be totally hosed if that were to ever happen!

You're lucky you weren't arrested. I got stopped in Florida back when I was in college and the friendly female officer asked me to step out of the car so she could explain what was going on to me. As soon as I did her backup drove me into the asphalt and cuffed me. Turns out my license had been suspended in Florida a few years prior. First I'd heard of it, so I contacted Florida DMV and it turns out my payment of a speeding ticket was late. Back then, and probably still the case today, Florida would automatically suspend your license if you didn't pay the ticket, or paid it late. In order to lift the suspension, you had to pay the ticket (if not yet paid), and a fine. Only then would your license be reinstated. I'm not aware of any statute of limitations on a license being suspended. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and one controlled by the state. If they suspend it, I suspect it could stay suspended in perpetuity if the state so wished.

please OP dont read this the wrong way

I hear ya it sucks but !!!!!

I am asking you why or how could you have not known you had a speeding ticket ? was it a traffic cam thing or ?
cause if I got pulled over for speeding I would have went to court to plead my case and get it reduced or maybe try to get it dismissed if I was good for 2 years or something ???
or just paid the thing !!!!!

This happened to my now wife many many years ago when we first started going out.
A speeding ticket she got in her first and only time in idaho caught up
to her and they suspended her license for 60 days.

She sought out an attorney as you (should) and will be doing but she
was told straight up after telling him "she didn't get any warning" that
    yes she did.
The "ticket" itself is the warning and they pretty much covered their
bases with the terms on the back of the ticket.

I hope it goes better for you but it did all work out for us.
She grit her teeth got through her suspension and now to this day
    watches her speed extra close.
