Driving is a privilege, not a right.

"Even the legislature has no power to deny to a citizen the right to travel upon the highway and transport his property in the ordinary course of his business or pleasure, though this right may be regulated in accordance with the public interest and convenience."
Chicago Motor Coach v Chicago 169 NE 22

"The right of the citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, either by carriage or by automobile, is not a mere privilege which a city may prohibit or permit at will, but a common right which he has under the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
    Thompson v Smith 154 SE 579.

"The right to travel is a part of the liberty of which the citizen cannot be deprived without due process of law under the 5th Amendment."
    Kent v Dulles, 357 U.S. 116, 125.

"Undoubtedly the right of locomotion, the right to remove from one place to another according to inclination, is an attribute of personal Liberty, and the right, ordinarily, of free transit from or through the
territory of any State is a right secured by the l4th Amendment and by other provisions of the Constitution."
    Schactman v Dulles, 96 App D.C. 287, 293.

Errr... never mind. I guess driving peaceably used to be a fundamental right, but now is in the same category as alligator ownership and the right to keep and bear arms.

Here's the dirty little secret, all that other crap you get harassed day in and day out about is no different than gun ownership. The only danger in most deregulation is that some government apparatchik won't be able to look up porn all day long in their office, purchase hookers on the state credit card, get paid better than you while working less, get a better pension than you, and get free healthcare while YOU get the bill.

armakraut turns everything into some Constitutional argument, even when it has nothing to do with the topic. The OP is just pissed that he didnt get a letter about losing his license, which I do not think is that much to ask. If your credit card gets canceled due to lack of payment they send you lots of mail about it.

The first two cases dealt directly with motor vehicles.

The state would be better served treating payment issues as tax liens. These people who get treated like an ATM are usually too dumb to hate the state, they just hate the cop.

When I'm driving around I try to be the best driver that I can be, I try to obey the rules of the road best I can and I'm proud of my driving record. Never gotten a speeding ticket (knock on wood).

We issue drivers licenses to people who can't really drive, not that it matters, because the jailers tell me that they drag in a lot of people who drive around for years on suspended, non-existent, or no-habla documents. If you're worried about anarchy, you pretty much have anarchy right now, you're just not getting a very good tax-rate deal on anarchy.

I just find it very odd that most of what regular folks regard as revocable privileges can be proved through case law to have been regarded as god-given liberties at one point.

Sorry for having to say this. You know if you ever get a speeding ticket or parking ticket or if you don't pay your car insurance. Driving is not a right. When you get a ticket either pay it get a lawyer and fight it. I use to here it all day " did'nt know i had 9 tickets" really you did'nt well you get a free ride in my car. maybe that will help you remember while you wait for your court date. Pay your tickets, pay your insurance if you can't take a bus or cab. Sorry its just me ranting. Feels good to let off steam. I am not in that line of work anymore. Now i work overseas. Pay is better and I do'nt have to put up with really stupid people. If I affended anyone I am sorry.

    Well said

As to being denied the "right" to drive. You have no right to drive; you have a right to travel. Can't play by the rules use your feet to exercise your right to travel.

What are you mad about, you got a ticket did not pay it, probably because you did not live here and thought you could just ignore it, I mean pay your tickets, get a lawyer if you want, guarantee it would have been cheaper to pay the ticket. You sound like my son who just got pulled over with a suspended license, I forgot I got the ticket was his excuse, that did not fly with me, so he stayed in the state hotel all night, maybe it will teach him some personal responsibility? Just an FYI in Florida don't pay your ticket, your license is suspended you got 30 days and 2 to 3 extensions, don't pay your insurance the same thing happens, your insurance company is required to report it with in a week our so. Then you can have your license and can have tag taken as well.

Well I for one apologize for assuming, but please for give me I think there is more to the story, did you pay the ticket within 30 days? If so then you might have a case, what your damages would be other than getting the 2 tickets dropped? Call Florida and get a record you paid the ticket and take that to the judge. You could also pull a copy of your driving record to see what's on it?
