Although I agree that Amarakraut may be over-analyzing the OP's situation I totally agree with the following....

Here's the dirty little secret, all that other crap you get harassed day in and day out about is no different than gun ownership. The only danger in most deregulation is that some government apparatchik won't be able to look up porn all day long in their office, purchase hookers on the state credit card, get paid better than you while working less, get a better pension than you, and get free healthcare while YOU get the bill.

LOL. This is so true. Most of this stuff is a money grab, and has very little to do with public safety or "justice" whatever the Hell that might be.

If you aren't armed when you take a dump in your own home then your opinion on what is a practical daily carry weapon isn't interesting to me.

AFAIK there is no requirement to notify anyone of anything, especially the way people move around these days. My tags expired once when i was younger and moving more often and I didn't keep up with it. The cop that pulled me over was nice enough to let me drive on but explained that the state has no obligation to notify you of such things.

Something is missing from the OP's story. Got a speeding ticket in 2002, paid it on time, doesn't hear a peep again for 8 years, and just now gets pulled over because of expired tags and informed that he's been driving on a suspended license all this time?

Not for nothing, but I gotta agree with ZDL that the expired tags thing doesn't foster much confidence that the ticket was paid, or if it was paid that it was paid on time. and, in fairness to the cop that pulled you over, what you looked like to him on paper was a complete idiot that had a suspended license and expired tags, and most cops are going to look at that as willful stupidity. Just sayin.

Keep in mind that Case Law and Constitution often are diametrically opposed... There is also an ocean's difference between "Legal" and "Lawful".

How long were the tags dead? At a minimum, they have been dead 20+ days, since March ended more than 20 days ago.

    Why?

Many moons ago when I was 16 or 17, I paid a speeding ticket by mail but apparently missed some of those $5 (or some number) extra per day fines because I was late. Hear nothing until a year or so later when I get a notice from my insurance company that I was being dropped for a suspended license. That cost me hundreds for something that they could've dropped a $.16 stamp on a letter to my address that was right on my license and saved me a lot of trouble. Luckily I caught it that way instead of during a traffic stop.

Ever since that day I get receipts and every bit of documentation I can when I deal with any government entity and don't assume anything is ever taken care of.

It sounds like crap to me based off the info given. I find this to make about as much sense as when a license is suspended because of failure to make child support payments, or similar reasons. A paid ticket from 3 years ago shouldn't have anything to do with today.

I think I've been a city cop too long. After seeing armed robberies, rapes, shootings and burglaries on a daily basis, I look at expired tabs under 30 days as a nothing issue.

CS16- Its possible that there is something else going on that you don't know about. There could be a records mix up, or someone could have been using your info. I've seen both happen before.

Isn't it usually more about an excuse to make contact than it is about the tag itself?

Several years ago when I was living in the Northwest I had a similar situation. I was living with my brother and I got a speeding ticket. I paid the ticket (85.00) and never heard another word.

Fast-forward a couple of years later, I am driving along and get stopped for speeding. Trooper tells me that my license was suspended for an unpaid speeding ticket. Since it was the only one I had had in years I knew which one he was referring to. I was fortunate in that he allowed me to continue on (I was about 80 miles from home), but still cited me for driving w/o license. He told me to make sure that I get it taken care of.

Because I never kept a copy of the money order I sent I ended up paying 200.00 to pay the ticket again (plus late fees) and then had to appear in court in the other jurisdiction for the DWLS. Needless to say it was a large pain in the ass. What really pissed me off was that I paid the original and never received a notice from the DMV or court.
