I converted to double edge (DE) shaving almost two years ago. I typically use a Merkur razor with either Derby or Israeli Persona blades, a Vulfix brush and D.H. Harrison soap. I found that the more expensive soaps like D.H. Harrison (compared to Col. Conks) produce a better lather and last much longer (3+months). I also use a Moss scuttle which is well worth the cost. The shave cream from C.E. Bigelow does a great job also and the travel sized tubes were on sale recently.

I finish with Nivea Sensitive Skin shave balm and some Pinaud's aftershave. (In Iraq being trendy doesn't matter)

If you're patient, you can find vintage Gillette razors on eBay for much less than a new Merkur razor.
