I've found a large ALICE with TT's frame, "super straps" and "super belt" really work quite well. I began backpacking with ALICE because it was cheap, and I've returned to it after a years' long journey because of its simplicity and durability.
Like several others I spent a portion of my late teens and early 20s with ALICE, and I think some of my current back issues are due to that.
But adding new straps and frame have really helped. I've tried a few better rucks but that is an expensive proposition, and I end up coming back. One of the main reasons is hating the zippers, as you mention.
This is also a tag because the pics aren't coming up for me at work.
