Thanks for the reply; I'll look into the BPS/Nordic possibility. Thanks to your post (yours looks great and is exactly what I've had in mind) I've decided mine has been on the back burner for too long. Tonight I tried some Remington magazine caps on it for size. The 20ga 870 is not even close, but the 12ga is at least close in diameter. I think I remember reading somewhere that the 16ga A5 mostly shares parts commonality with the 12ga. I'm hoping that will hold true with the Savage, especially concerning the mag tubes.
I have zero intentions of doing a Form 1 on it. Chopping the barrel to 18.5" and the stock to 12ish is as far as I can see myself going, as the receiver has issues and I don't trust it to hold up to high round count training and fun. The only role I can really see for it is leaned up behind the kitchen door for the occasional snake or other vermin, and if I'm honest with myself it can fill that role just fine with its full length, full choke barrel. But where's the fun in that, lol?
I'm looking forward to tearing it down to replace the springs, inspect the innards, and generally learn about the mechanism. Oh, and I also picked up an ancient NOS big-head safety I plan to install. I think it's a Williams; I need to dig it out from the back of the parts bin where it's been languishing for a few years.
