I decided to gloss up the dull RRA 6-hole handguards from my GUU-5/P and 733 clones.
I took the handguards off and hit them with three coats of glossy clear coat, with the intention of making them look more like shiny new Colt 6-holers.
It didn't work. The gloss cured strangely, so instead of looking like new Colt handguards, they actually kind of look like Colt handguards that have some miles on them.....which is also kinda cool.

GUU-5/Ps are the perfect clone project for the lazy or budget-minded Retrohead, because there are basically no rules. Different parts combinations, mismatched colors, it all works.
I have zero affiliation with the US Air Force but I find the variations in their franken-carbines fascinating. And my GUU is one of my coolest clones in my opinion.
    Post-handguard glossing:

And some real ones for comparison:

Vintage AR and Clone pic thread.....

Not sure if this is okay here or not, so let me know.
I was inspired to build something close to what I used in the Army.
Colt A2 barrel assembly, Colt handguards, Colt forged tube, JSE Surplus A2 upper.
I’m lefty, so it’s got my old Badger charging handle and a BAD ambi safety.
    Lower is Aero.
Other discrepancies are the Daniel Defense chrome bcg I had laying around, and the Geissele trigger.
I deployed with 4/3 ADA under 1st I.D. to Tikrit from ‘04-‘05. We weren’t high speed enough for M4’s, so we brought our A2 rifles.
ETA: “fixed” it with correct handguards.

Waiting on a screw to mount my A2 stock.

If it’s what you had, just use A2 handguards. It would look better than an uncovered quad rail.

I agree, I’m looking for some A2 handguards.

Outstanding job Sir. Very well done. If you’re satisfied with it then I’d be proud of it at the range also.

My version of a 654, obviously NOT the correct barrel length, and there are a few other things that you could pick at, but if you pick at it too much I'll just change my mind and call it a GUU-5P.
