I spent a few years in Germany myself, and the Weissen is good beer, absolutely without a doubt my favorite of beers.
If you are loooking to make your own beer, check online for a local brewers club. They will know where locally to get all the ingredients, and most of them have tasting sessions, where homebrewers bring in their favorite home brews for the others to try!
The one nearest me goes even further and has monthly Beer Dinners, where htey serve anywhere from 10-30 different beers, and you sit and eat a fine meal along with it!
I have yet to go, because it is usually about $30 per person, but I do want to go to one eventually!
