M4C is not about the GD forum. It is about technical discussions involving gear, firearms, mindset, fieldcraft, and training. If you cannot add anything of value to the above discussions, that is fine with us. Sit back, read and enjoy. If you believe that new members not being able to post in the GD some how detracts from what the forum is about, then you do not understand what we are about.

We are interested in attracting the "20%" crowd. These are the people that either carry a gun for a living, have extensive training (or are interested in training) and understand why you buy quality gear and guns. So if we offend the 80% of shooters out there because we enforce our rules and don't let them use the GD forum until they have posted 200 times in the technical forums, we are just fine with that.

M4C is an "Elite" forum. We want members to use the technical forums more than the GD forum. This is not the norm with 95% of all other gun forums. So yes, we are different and it has worked for us since day one.
I got you on that. I come here because there is no better source of knowledge for this stuff. I thought, though, that sharing that knowledge with the ignorant was one of the goals of the site as well and only now realize my mistake.

Now I'll just slink back to my slow lane or maybe get in TOS carpool lane.

I understand the frustration some people have with a "+1" post as it is not adding much. However, while the site is geared to be an informational site like "rob_s" wants, there is a certain amount of give and take in the dialog.

Posts are usually a response in a written conversation. The format of internet forums is that people can join the conversation and the exchange is not limited to the first person who posts a thread and the first person who responds to that thread. Flogging someone for a "+1" post or getting upset by it is like getting bent out of shape because someone said, "I agree" in a conversation. -Now if all a person does is write "+1" or post nonsense to increase post count, you're looking at a different issue.

Regarding the community thing, each board has its own character and that is because each place is its own community with its own tribal structure and rules. Visit GT or TOS or LF and you can see some differences. Each place/community decides what it wants to reinforce. From my point of view, it is a balancing act. If you have a place that is open to everyone and encourages any and all posts you get the problem of tons of nonsense since everyone is there to spew whatever random thought occurs to the person at the moment. It makes finding useful material harder. On the other hand, you can have a board that is so cliquish that it's always the same 20-30 people who are contributing / running things. It is an echo chamber where people repeat ad nauseum what they already emotionally believe, especially in GD.

If you clamp down so hard that the forum is no longer "fun" people will go elsewhere and ultimately that drives down traffic and deters people who could or would have something useful to contribute from even joining.

I voted to get rid of GD because, in my experience, GD (regardless of forum) is always the place the bulk of problems occur. Whether it's political, religious, a personal preference thing or simply someone slamming another person's family pictures, you get a lot of arguing in GD about stuff that really does not move the ball forward and does not educate the shooting public.

You are correct. Everyone started somewhere and we want people to grow in their knowledge. To our knowledge, all our IP's, SME's, Mod's and Staff share their knowledge (along with the regular members).

The way to learn is to do a lot of reading (tacked threads), attend training, and shoot. We encourage all of these things.

I am relatively new to understanding the AR platform and so far have only taken one carbine course, but a great one.

When I started coming to M4carbine I mainly visited the other technical forums. Primarly the AR technical discussions then the gear forum and eventually have startd to dig through the training and tactics.

I've browsed the GD forum and may have posted something sometime a long time ago but I don't remember. If it did not exsist I don't think I would notice as I just found out about the 200 minimum post.

I come here to get professional input and knowledge on technical aspects. Which only happens because the mods are strict and quick to shut down crap. A good example is some guy came in and posted a "SHTF handgun" thread in the handgun section. He did the exact samething on calguns. The m4carbine thread got locked right away, the calguns thread is still going and I have yet to look past page 2 but I garauntee its all garbage. This place has credibility because of the mods work to keep the crap out. Lets hope it stays that ways.

Respect the opinions of every member here, regardless of post count, but if we return to the opening question, "has it helped ...?", I've got to concede that it has. So much so, in fact, that I have actually enjoyed several of the GD threads in play recently, despite being a very non-GD kind of guy by nature. The topics which have come up have been more relevant, and the discussion more focused than was the case just a few months ago.

To those who are already on board with the culture of the site, and feel unncessesarily constrained by the post-count limitation, it may be worth reiterating that site sponsorship eliminates this restriction -- not because of an exchange of treasure for freedom, but rather because of what it signals about the member's level of commitment to the site and it's larger objectives.

A couple of recent threads that could've gone seriously kiddywampus, and didn't, are evidence of the effectiveness of such standards.

I also believe that the mods are being much more attentive as well.

    All is welcome.

I say raise it for one reason: I get PM's from people who want to make their thoughts known on topics in GD. Many of those comments are incredibly idiotic, making me thankful that these people cant post in GD.
