I think of gun cleanliness three ways, in descending order of attention to detail: storage/armory clean, duty/defense clean, and range clean.

The first would be a detailed cleaning where the gun is free of fouling, and appropriate for longer periods of storage and lack of attention where rust, corrosion and similar effects were likely.

The second is appropriate when the gun is expected to be used for important purposes, and should be relatively free of fouling, debris, and the like.

Range clean is the most minimal or cursory of cleaning, minimally sufficient to the ensure that the gun will complete the next expected orders of fire. In the case of an AR type, "range clean" might mean that the shooter looked at the gun, saw that there were no massive chunks of debris and the bore was clear of obstructions, and simply relubed it.

Not a perfect model, but makes sense in my mind and gun cabinet.

Check out the July 2010 issue of SWAT magazine. Theres an article on a colt 6940 that blew up right behind the ejection port after around 18,000 or so I think it was. No cleaning either. Impressive.

I am looking at it right now... 17600 rounds, that is crazy... although it did have a field cleaning by Jeff Frueler at apr.15600 so he could change the extractor and spring.... the really sweet one is the BCM 14.5" middy that Pat Rogers is running, the current round count is around 36000 so far

Yep as far as I could tell from a AAR from USMC03 on ar15chatterbox... that puts BCM at the top of my list

I'm a bit guilty of this, but I don't do it because I'm that anal about my guns. I just hate having something that dirty in my house.

I'm 1,200 rds into the 2,000 rd. challenge, and I've already ruined two shirts, one pillow, and had to flip a couch cushion. I'm about ready to say screw it and just clean the damn thing.

Can you imagine ...... in the dead of night ...... slipping that weapon under a recruit's bunk at P.I. ...... and getting a picture of the looks on his and the D.I.'s faces at the 05:45 formation next a.m.

Do you mean the bolt broke or the rifle ka-boomed?
My brother saw Deliverance and bought a Bow. I saw Deliverance and bought an AR-15.
