Train with M855, which JSP to use for home defense?

I've gone through, what I've thought are the relevant stickies and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. If anyone does have a link for the information, I'll take that too.

If I have my optics zeroed using M855, which of the recommended 5.56/.223 duty loads keeps the same or very close trajectory out to about 100 yards? Would it be any of the 60-64gr rounds?

    Thanks for the help.

For up to about 100yds an AR sighted in with one type of ammo will still print within a few inches with another ammo.

I recently sighted in my 12.5" SBR at 50yds with American Eagle 55gr FMJ and then a week later sighted it in with BH Mk262 Mod 1 77gr ammo and it only need 1 click of windage on my Aimpoint C3 (2MOA).

If you're wanting a 62gr load to duplicate the M855 trajectory then check out Federals Fusion 62gr soft point.

    Bolt gun ammo...

JSP is a non-standard ammunition and shouldn't be used in an AR-15. The risk of feed related malfunctions is significantly higher than with FMJ/OTM.

Dude, I can pretty much gurantee every PD in my County (as well as the PD I work for) use some form of JSP! As far as it not operating in the AR/M16 platform, no problems so far in the 10 plus years that we've employed the 55 grain Winchester JSP (Ranger) out of our Colt Commando and Colt M4A1 carbines...

If every PD in the county is using JSP, it must be copacetic!

MK18Pilot--You are correct, high volume usage of JSP ammo (300+ rounds per day) has been noted to increase feeding issues. However, few LE agencies train at this rate. In addition, a quick cleaning at lunch can mitigate the problem during long training courses. Note that the FBI, CHP, LAPD, etc.. have all issued JSP ammo for their AR15's without major issues...

Designs like the Fusion/GD have a smaller more protected lead tip that feeds very well.

The M16/M4/AR-15 family of weapons was never designed with soft point ammunition as a consideration. The fact of the matter is the feed ramp modifications to the locking lugs on the barrel extension create sharp edges. These edges at a minimum can scar the point of the bullet and at maximum result in bullet set-back and a nice KB. I doubt any of the above agencies are shooting select fire as this would likely reveal the shortcomings of JSP ammunition in an autoloading rifle.

Federal Fusion is hunting ammunition if I am not mistaken...

Actually, quite a few of the agencies using JSP's have full-auto capability--keep in mind that Win 64 gr JSP (RA223R2) is on the CA state ammo contract and is quite widely used. Likewise, both the Federal 62 gr JSP (LE223T3) and Nosler 60 gr Partition loaded by Winchester have been in Federal LE use.
