    Outlander Systems' IEIR

Finally getting around to doing an assembly...

    Intermediate Engagement/Interdiction Rifle

    BCM 16" Mid-Length Upper and VLTOR CASV-M:

The goal for me is to put together a medium-range, relatively simple, rugged system. Primary uses will be for courses/training, and defense.

I'm in the process of streamlining my weapons, and designating a weapon for a particular role. This, is going to be configured for an, as the name states, intermediate range system. I want magnification. I will not run 1X RDS on anything bigger than a 14.5" weapon again.

My next assembly will be a SBR, but currently my efforts are focused on this build.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The list of other items I plan to incorporate are:

    Optic: Trijicon TR24(X)
The only consideration I'm debating on is whether or not to go for the green reticule. Being in a woodland environment, and if ever fully deployed, it would most likely be fielded in this AO, I need to do more research on the contrast and ability to track the reticule against a green backdrop. Red is a contender, solely due to familiarity. I am extremely interested in this setup due to the variability in magnification. My only concern is the ruggedness of the Accupoint series.

    BCG: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. I am currently deciding between a BCM, and Young Manufacturing. I would like to try out some of the more exotic, treated BCG's, but I have some reservations concerning potential corrosion issues.

    Charging-Handle: BCM Mod3
Been there. Done that. Have never used anything better. Have had no issues with it snagging on gear.

    Grip: Magpul MIAD
I've tried A1 grips, CAA, Tapco, TangoDown, and the MOE. None of those compare to the MIAD with small backstrap for my mitts.

    Triggerguard: Magpul Enhanced
Trust it more than the MOE for durability, nice to have the extra space.

    VFG: TangoDown or KAC
Having tried several, these two are my favourites. The KAC wins for my ergos, but the TD comes out in terms of modularity.

    Stock: VLTOR iMod
Being an improved Modstock, I don't see how this can be anything less than stellar. Solid/repeatable cheek-weld, onboard storage, excellent ergos.

    Trigger: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. A solid, single-stage trigger, unless someone can convince me that a two-stage is rugged enough to risk my life with it.

    Receiver Extension: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. I am highly interested in VLTOR's, but I don't believe I can replicate the type of endplate-staking that BCM and Colt do.

    Selector Switch: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. Considering something ambidextrous, but I need to do my homework on the reliability.

    Light: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. I'd like to try a Surefire LED weaponlight...Scout Light to save weight, M952V to get laid...

    Sling: XXXXXXXXX
Open for debate. Will go with a reputable maker. Single point all the way. If I have a need to carry this thing in a defensive role, comfort can hit the road. After my experience switching to a two-point sling, I will never use anything other than single-point from here out.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's of course odd considerations, such as the potential addition of a laser as a redundancy, or an offset MRDS.

First order of business is getting out the punch and ditching the front sling swivel...

    Components/Price List:

    • BCM 16" Mid-Length Upper Assembly - G&R Tactical - $435
    • VLTOR CASV-M Rail System - G&R Tactical - $270
    • VLTOR iMod Mil-Spec Stock - VLTOR - $100
    • BCM GunFighter Charging Handle (Mod 3) - G&R Tactical - $44.95
    • Knight's Forward Pistol grip - Knight's Armament - $67.13

I have a TR-24G, and like it a great deal. I have checked the red versus the green, and the green triangle seems to win for me.

With the except of my 6920, I have BCM FA BCG's in all my AR's, and have been quite pleased with them.

Sounds like a very good carbine to me. I have something very similar to it, so I'm biased.

I would go with the BCM FA BCG as well, they now have the one with the ionbond finish too.

As for the receiver extension, well unless you're going to run a UBR stock or install an ASAP plate I would leave good enough alone, the staking from BCM and Colt is more than adequate IMHO.

For the selector switch, "my rifle" has an LMT ambi selector that a member from another site milled down on the right side (KAC Style) so it would not interfere with my trigger finger, and I am more than pleased with it. Have had no issues thus far, but only one 3 day class so far using it.

I'm happy with my VTAC sling on my middy, but will be looking for an MS2 sling for whenever I finally get around to putting my SBR together.

As for the light, I'm very pleased with my X300 thus far, it was GREAT in the night portion of my last class back in Feb, but I have been looking into maybe switching to a mini Scout Light myself as well.

Good luck with the build and make sure to keep this thread alive as the rig progresses.

FM, not to hijack, but come out to July drills and I'll show you my take on the MS2 (a BFG VCAS modified to work like the MS2) which I greatly prefer.

I am excited to see this together.

I am thinking about putting a CASV-M on a middy of mine.
    Thanks

If I remember your thread properly, this appears to be a well made factory version of the same concept, albeit with a lighter material than the VCAS. I plan to purchase one soon, but I'm torn between HK hooks and MASH hooks.

Sounds very similar to my BCM middy. I have the TR24G with German cross hair in a LaRue mount.

I opted for the 12" DD Lite rail and micro gas block over the fixed FSB. Then added Troy sights front and rear. They are useless with the TR24 though. No real chance of co witnessing. Kept them anyway.

I used the BCM BCG over others based largely on 'Filthy 14's' performance.

I went with a LMT SOPMOD stock, got an entire kit, buffer tube and all from LMT.

Being left handed I got a LMT ambi selector switch as well as a Norgon mag catch.

The trigger is a RRA 2 stage, no real reason other then it was already installed in the lower I was using. May get a SSA in the future. But I have RRA's in a couple high round count guns and haven't had any issues.

I am going back and forth on the VFG, currently its a Mag Pul AFG. I have a FUG that I'm playing around with as well.

The sling is a padded BFG Vickers with a DD QD mount up front.

I'm still deciding on the light. It's looking like an X300 will go at 12 o'clock and I'll just move the front BUIS back. I have a 952 in a LaRue mount sitting in the safe. The 12 o'clock mounts just make more sense.

I'm going to try, my new upper should be done by then and I got a holster squared away for my 1911.

Thanks to everyone for all the excellent insight...

SeriousStudent: How's the green-on-summer leaves/pines contrast? If I could dust off some hogs with this thing, I would be very happy.

Fire_Medic: After looking at the Ion-Bond finished version of the BCG from BCM, I may suck it up and drop the extra sixty bucks for the upgrade. Since I'm building for reliability, I don't see that extra cash being spent pointlessly if it's going to give me increased lubricity. I'm absolutely hell-bent on the iMod, plus I already ordered it . I am smitten by Colt's and BCM's staking style, and I am thoroughly convinced there's no way I could do a better job on my own.

JeepDriver: How do you like the German X-hair reticule? I'm considering that, but I'm thinking that would be a preferable setup for something configured for longer-ranges. The only downside to my setup will be no way for a 12 o'clock mounting of the light. I know with absolute certainty I will be doing that setup for the next (SBR) assembly. I don't see how that configuration can be beat, in terms of obstacle negotiation and obstruction avoidance.

On further inspection, I can say that I've never been as impressed with an upper receiver assembly, as I am by the BCM. The T-markings are absolutely awesome. Not to get too wine-tasty, but it's the first AR I've owned that really struck me as having a "military quality" to it. To me, it's the most wicked piece of hardware I've handled since an A2 Musket. If this is the type of quality I can expect from BCM, I am extremely impressed.

I recently decided to start from scratch. All my prior AR/M4-type rifles and carbines have always been "lacking". I'm not insinuating that I couldn't produce results with them, but, especially after becoming a member here, I've always felt like I've been polishing turds. Within the last two-three months I unloaded my S&W M&P15 and my Ruger SR-556; the two smokewagons I'd narrowed my collection down to. The 1/9 ROT ultimately was/is a deal breaker. The piston system was something that, I feel, was a novelty, as well as a logistical challenge in the event of parts-failure and resupply.

Incorrect barrel steel, no HPT/MPI, etc., etc.

My problem has been working with, and training with a weapon that I could have unwavering faith in. Hopefully, this assembly will address the issue I've been having with that "cold, dark feeling" since 2003, when I purchased my first AR.

A local dealer had a 6920 and a 6940 in stock. I came pretty close to taking the coin from my sales, and going this route. The front sight, and "stuck with it" rail-interface turned me off. After reading about the virtues of the mid-length system, and seeing no point NOT to go mid-length on a 16" barreled weapon, my choices narrowed down to the BCM instead of the 6920.

I took a leap of faith on it, and it's the first purchase I've made in a long time in the AR/M4 realm that I feel my expectations were exceeded in terms of build-quality.

As to what I did with the loot from the other two...

Spent the bulk of it on an Hk45, a light, a holster for my G21SF, and 2,000 rounds of .45ACP.

    great thread

I'll be watching with interest as I would like to put together exactly what you are putting together

May I ask how you came to choose the TR24? And obviously you won't be able to cowitness but are you thinking of mounting a rear folding BUIS? If so have you thought about which one?
