Ok I've settled on the 14.5 middy. What is the difference, other than price, between the middy with the DD Lite 12, Larue or Troy rails? The DD and Larue middy is about $130.00 more than the middy with the Troy rails.

    this may help

The Troy is going to be an 11.0, whereas the others are going to be 12.0 over a low-profile gas block or 9.0 behind a standard FSB. Beyond that it's personal preference based on prior experience or the data in the chart I linked to above.

If you want four full rails I'd personally opt for the DD Lite as it's the lightest weight of the options.

Other than weight, length, and price really no difference then.

There are dimensional (thickness and height) differences too. Also, some are more round, others more oval.

I'm sure this has been answered before but, what is the difference between a 16 in. middy and a 14.5 in. with a perm. attached brake (like the PWS?) It seems everyone is opting to go with the 14.5 perm. attach and I'm curious as to why?

Isn't it easier to get the 16 in. and then be able to change your brake if you need/feel like it?

Thanks and thanks for the great review.

I think due to the 14.5" middy having less dwell time than the 16" middy, there is less felt recoil, thus making it more desirable. Add an H2 buffer and it makes for a very soft shooting rifle, so I've read.

Yeah. There's really no need for the extra 1.5" of barrel with the 16. But you do give up versatility if you go permed.

I'd just get a 14.5 with no perm and put it on an SBR lower and be done with it.

makes me happy as I'm currently running a BCM 16" middy upper w/ PWS FSC556, tubbs CS spring, and H2 buffer.

FWIW, something I'm hoping to eventually get to is comparing a 16" govt-profile mid-length to a 14.5" govt-profile mid-length both wearing the PWS FS556. I happen to have the upper and the loose PWS, as well as the 14.5". the hitching point at the moment is that the 16" I have is wearing standard plastic handguards and an F-FSB while the 14.5" is wearing an 11.0 VTAC tube and low-profile gas-block. If the weights wind up close enough I'm not sure it matters but someone will surely scream about the testing being un-scientific if they're not identical.

I'm interested in that test as well. Everything I have read is saying that the 14.5 middy is much smoother, etc. than the 16. I'd love to see a side by side with the same furniture, FH, etc. Good idea.
