I have never seen a weapon run better from scraping carbon like this. Use chemical solvents and stop worrying about the carbon. It's going to be there regardless.

If brake cleaner doesn't do it for your anal retentiveness, use Montana Copper Killer. Strongest stuff I've ever seen.

I practice what I preach. No problems yet.

Every couple thousand rounds I spray a bunch of M-Pro7 down the carrier and let it sit a few and then scrub it with a nylon brush. Shake it dry and lubricate.

Sewvacman is correct...therefor some OT stuff removed.

but the answers are not even addressing the question if they're coming from people who have no use for the item in question to begin with.

Can we please hear from people who have used this or other tools like it who actually have an opinion about them and leave the "Drama" to your own personal PM boxes. I'm not saying you guys don't have valid arguments, but vent them elsewhere please. A new thread or PM each other would be ideal.

I'll say it again; I was speaking from experience from back when I used to clean.

Not to digress, but I recently bought some of that from MidwayUSA. I'm thinking about taking it to work with me, because I really believe you could wake up the dead just by taking the lid off... or the dead drunk, anyway.

So what you're saying is that this board should be littered with complaint threads fueled by emotional arguments instead of discussions like what is occurring in this thread?

Could someone please post the pictures of the pitted carriers so that we may all see this?

I live in Florida, i keep a rifle in my trunk 365 days a year. The rifle in question has 15k rounds on the original CMT bolt. I strip and clean the BCG every 2-3k rounds. The stripping and cleaning involves heavy blasting of CLP and a quick wipe down, nothing more. I keep the rifle oiled, to date i havent noticed any pitting or abnormal wear.

Again, sample size of one rifle but none of my other firearms receive any better treatment.

The 30 dollars spent on these types of tools are better spent, at least for me on 150 rounds of 9mm or three range visits.

Again, the OP asked whether or not these devices are worth the investment, my opinion based upon my use parameters is that they are not. Until someone can tell me why these devices exist and why they are necessary to keep the rifle functioning and in tip top shape i will continue to voice my opinion that they are worthless.

Someone mentioned that caked on carbon with the inclusion of moisture can cause pitting, i want to see some evidence, good quality evidence.

Also, just a hypothetical but even the best carbon removal tool is not going to remove 100% of the carbon present on the rifle. What is the difference between 1mm of carbon and 3mm? Isnt all carbon created equal? I would think a good penetrating oil would go where it needs to go regardless of depth.

Quib has posted pics before of a pitted bolt after thick carbon was left on for an extended period. Search isn't working for me right now..

If you keep the gun well lubed you likely will not have a problem. I don't think many are. There is the camp that sees people like Pat Rogers taking guns well into double digit numbers without any cleaning, and take that to mean they don't need to clean their guns. If they do its just a wipe down, and more lube.

Im not a detail strip every time the gun gets fired kind of guy but Im not bothered my taking an extra few minutes cleaning to get baked on carbon off. Is your time so worthwhile a few minutes is going to hurt you? Is it worth the risk of damage however unlikely?

I use wooden tooth picks to scrape off carbon inside the BC. Its cheap and safe on the metal. Works very well, about 4-5 picks will remove 500 rounds worth of carbon inside the BC that the solvent bath couldnt remove. If you have fat finger syndrom, you can atach the picks to twizers or small plier. Be creative guys, you dont need a fancy tool to get the job done. Heck, when I was in the Corps I would use fallen twigs sharpened with a knife to get that carbon off.
