    No, they can wear down and leak where it goes into the carrier key.

    Especially if whoever assembled the upper does not pay meticulous care in alignment during installation.

    I am anal about Gas Tube alignment.
    My brother saw Deliverance and bought a Bow. I saw Deliverance and bought an AR-15.

    The key here is to start with the most probable issue and the cheapest. What can you tell us about the upper?

    Who makes it?

    Is the carrier key staked correctly?

    Since you said that it is only happening in auto I have my suspicions. If you have access to a bore scope take a look at the gas port. I would also be running at least an H2 buffer.

    Put a different upper on it, one with a auto carrier and see what happens. H2 buffer should run fine in a 16 inch. May help narrow things down.
