I sent an email to Caldwell asking what they suggest. Will share whatever, if any, response I get.

The Caldwell 7 Rest has piqued my interest as being a possible solution. Portable, foldable, and they show it with an AR on it, albeit a bull-stocked 20"...

    Bag Riders

http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com...ar-bag-riders/ for the bag riders I was trying to describe. Think I'll try to build my own, first. I like challenges.

I think you would be better off getting the rock and picking up some sand bags for the buttstock. There are a couple of the older version of the matrix at the range I go to [or at least its a coldwell with the same design]. They totally suck I have to turn them 180* around with the back hanging off the bench.

I don't do any bench rest shooting, but I use the lead sled solo to save some time for intially sighting in long guns and optics. I rationalized the cost with the thought that others would borrow it, which has turned out to be the case.

For the bench, I simply use a Harris bipod with a LT QD, which is shared between my different guns and a home made sand bag and a squeeze bag for the stock rest. The bags are very small waterproof back packing bags and they are filled with airsoft pellets. It took me a while to figure out that airsoft pellets work the best for my needs.

I have a ROCK type rest and rear sand bag that I now shoot with. I've tried a couple of different sled type rest and didn't like them much. The bench rest type front and rear sand bag rest works a lot better for me. I even use the front rest for my pistols and they work fine.

For a long time I used a simple plastic rest I bought from Midway..I did OK, But, needed reset after every shot due to it being so light..About a month ago, I went to a auction with my step son where there was suposed to be some reloading equpitment up for sale..Long story short, it wasn't there, But some of this guy's shooting stuff was (no firearms) I bought a Caldwell Rock BR, For $46(got it, and the front and rear bags) I used it for the first time about a week ago,and it is a huge improvement over the rest I was using..It dosen't move..I did'nt have any height adjustment issues with it, there was plenty of thread left to go lower if I needed. It's great for accuracy testing with different loads,To get the rail to slide over the bag, I simply removed the VFG, and installed one of the rail covers that came with the rail..worked well. If you're going to use a rest, get something that dosen't move around, That Caldwell folding 7 thing, looks a little flimsy to me..I would'nt expect much from it..

I use a 3Day pack and rear bag (or no rear bag) from the prone. I did use a CineSaddle till someone put there Flash Hider on it and blew a hole in it

re: sliding, if the FF tube is a Troy VTAC instead of a full rail system should there be any issues?
