If he's talking about the smaller private pistol ranges, well, of course they wouldn't let anyone shoot rifles.
If you're in range, so are they...

For San Diego Orosco Ridge is pretty decent. You need a CA Adventure pass to go up there

No one's mentioned Angeles Shooting Range.

    Great for long rifle shoots.

On the rifle side, steel targets go out to 600 yards. Only on special days do they allow paper targets out there. I think it's for special groups; I don't know for sure, so don't quote me on it.

On the handgun side, steel targets and paper targets up to 100 yards. They allow rifle and shotguns at the far end of the range.

I've been going to Angeles as well. So far, so good.

I have a couple of friends who shoot at the LAX indoor range, but for 5.56/.223 options, you're limited to frangible (which they sell there).

I recommend that people stay away from the LAX Range and all of their American Defense Enterprises, Bill Beasley inspired goodness.

I'd ask you to elaborate, but a Google search lead to some cringe-worthy video.

Wow. Still, given the idiocy of the average person, I'm not surprised that they still manage to sucker people into their B-movie-esque training.
