As far as Bill Wilson creating a sport as a means to sell his high priced pistols, nothing is farther from the truth. One just has to look at the Nationals surveys over the last 8 years to see that Glocks and other low cost pistols dominate the sport. It's ironic that pistols such as STI and SVI are seldom seen. I guess when they learn to make a reliable magazine and follower that locks the slide back correctly, they may one day be considered for IDPA or as having potential for a self defense pistol (unless concealment is a consideration
).
I have seen a fair number of Trojan 9mm's in ESP in fact I used to use one. Sold it. The gun worked fine but needed the money to fund another project. One of our club members uses a Eagle in 40sw and loves it and I have never seen it choke on him. In our area Glocks are the most popular for SSP, CPD is 1911's with a smattering of Wilsons, Kimbers and Colts. ESP is dominated by Springfield XD's and a few 1911's in 9mm and 40sw.
IDPA is a fun sport. But at least in my area its simpler and its a great way to introduce new shooters to competative shooting. Once they get better they start shooting in USPSA and really start to have fun. Its kind of a training wheels sport.
