Heavier than lead home defense loads?

What are your thoughts on these? Any reports from the field yet?

No legitimate need for it, and it would be a total waste of money.

If you want harder shot, just buy a premium buckshot that is copper plated like Federal Tactical.

IMO, something like HeviShot Dead Coyote would be ideal for HD, particularly with a cyl. bore shotgun. I like the idea of 50 .20-cal. heavier than lead shot pellets hitting in a 6x6-in. pattern across a typical living room or down a typical hallway.

Tactical buck will put one large hole in a target at that range.

And I don't think spending $3 per shot defending my castle is too heavy a yoke to bear.

Further, seems I've read HeviShot is supposed to shatter when it hits hard targets yet penetrate deeply in meat.

I just like the idea that you can use a smaller pellet so your patterns are fuller if you need to stretch the range a little.

I have a friend that uses them on coyotes but I was just curious if any of this stuff was used on bad guys yet and how it might have performed.

I don't see any independent penetration testing, only buzz words like "Knockdown Power". Nobody knows for sure if the T shot in the Maximum Defense or Dead Coyote line will always achieve 12" of penetration. Heck, #4 lead buckshot isn't quite reliable achieving that.

Compared to plain jane 00 buckshot will achieve it. If you want more pellets, you can easily buy a 2 3/4" magnum with 12 .33 caliber pellets, or go with a #1 buckshot with 16 .30 caliber pellets.

Even looking at the Hevi-Shot 00 buckshot, I fail to see any advantage of it over lead 00 buckshot. The only advantage it has is that it is non-toxic which only counts when you are hunting. Hevi-Shot's entire business is built on the requirement of having non-toxic shot...... so I'll take their claims with a huge grain of salt.

IIRC, Hardened & Buffered #4 buckshot can usually pull off the required 12" of penetration.

That said, there still hasn't been any independent testing of Hevi-Shot buckshot.

I'd err on the side of caution and use #1-000 buckshot.

Being a dyed in the wool follower of The Box-o-Truth. The one thing I'm least worried about in the world...is needing heaver shot to over penetrate...more with my cylinder bore riot gun.

Get some cheap Remington or or S&B Hi-brass and you'll be just fine.

Coyote ammunition needs to be left to the coyotes.
