    6920 vs 6940

Assuming no price difference which model offers the greater opportunity to modify to one's heart content??

Is it true the rail on the 6940 is permanent?

The 6920 is more versatile. 6940 is a monolithic rail. 1 piece is the receiver and rail. I find the 7" rail on mine a little restricting to how my tastes have changed since I got it.
Still a solid shooting carbine that will last for a long long time and serve you well.
If you wanna run your support hand way out front like alot of folks do, or mount a light with thumb control- get the 6920,shave the fsb and put a 10 or 12 inch rail on it.
If you still want a 6940, let me know and I'll put one on EE for you.

Howdy Neighbor. We are both in Seattle!

Guess I will get the 6920 and keep my options open. The 2 models are going for less than $1K so I thought I would check about modularity before getting one.

A few of my buddies got them at work in a group buy. It is a solid carbine that is pretty damn accurate. My only gripe is the BUIS they use. But that is easily replaced.

If you have intentions on modifying, there's not point in a 6940.

The "rail" on the 6940 is monolithic. It's not attached to the rifle, as the upper receiver and rail section is a single assembly.

The 6940 is yet another case of Colt hitting the target but missing the bullseye.

Many people would like a monolithic Colt, and their version is pretty nice. The problem is that they mated it with a cockamamie folding front sight, and made the rail too short. If they had done something radical (for Colt) like going to a midlength gas system, kept the standard FSB, and a 9.0 length mono rail it could have been the hot new item. Or even a low-profile gas block and run a longer rail over it. Instead they made a series of odd choices (length, front sight) that pretty much ruin a great one (mono upper).
