    Shave FSB or replace?

I'm thinking about putting a 13" troy extreme battle rail on my Charles Daly M4LE meaning I have to do something about my FSB. At first I was going to have the FSB shaved down, but if the fsb will have to be removed I got to wondering if I should just have a low profile gas block installed. I liked the fact that by shaving the fsb I don't have to buy a gas block and I figured that it should be pretty soild since it's pinned in there. I wasn't sure though if the shaved fsb would still be attached as solid as it was since it lacks taper pins, which is why I thought a new gas block might be preferred. Can someone direct me on the the best route to take?

This has been discussed before, but a shaved down FSB is the most secure method. You can always pin a low-profile gas block, but I wouldn't remove a perfectly good pinned FSB to put on another low-profile gas block.

It also doesn't necessarily have to be removed, though it does make it easier to work with. I shaved down my DDM4 FSB while it was still installed on the barrel - cut the tower off with a bandsaw, and then shaped and smoothed out the cuts with a bench grinder and polishing wheel. I then heated and KG Gunkoted the shiny areas.

I see. I was planning on Adco doing the work since I lack the tools. I'd prefer to do the shaved fsb since it looks to be cheaper and I don't end up with an unneeded part.

BTW could a mod please edit my title so it says replace rather than raplace. Sigh, I need to proofread better.

I shaved my FSB to install a Troy Standard TRX 13" rail on my gun.

I did it 50/50- did the rough work mounted and then I dismounted the FSB to do the close in work (the FSB has to come off anyway to accommodate the troy barrel nut). It took a few hours to do the work to get it low profile enough to fit under the rail with enough clearance to ensure there will be no problems- a lot of material was removed.

The upside is that it saved me money, I have the most secure method of attachment, and I really like the results.

You're going to have to remove the FSB to shave it for install a Troy TRX rail. The TRX rails uses a proprietary barrel nut.

Unless your going to have someone shave it for you, or you have the skills, I would just replace it.

I shaved one myself once. Took too long, was messy, & didn't turn out that great. Now I just spend the $40 ot $60.

    But that's just me.

Adco can shave and FSB for $35 and since I was going to have them install the rail I figured they could also do that. The only reason I thought maybe it should be replaced is that for some reason I got this idea in my head that once removed the FSB wouldn't seal up as well when reinstalled. Can I assume I have this wrong?

    heres what I did.......

when I bought my rail I went with a low profile gas block, then later when I decided I wanted to run a different barrel. I pinned the FSB back on and sold it off to a friend that needed a pinned block. I say clamp on a new one and throw the stock one in a drawer in case you need it later for whatever reason...

Just let adco shave it. They know what they're doing.

The other issue you'll have is whether a new block is long enough to cover the old pin holes and possibly unfinished and/or blemished area where the old sight tower covered.
