I used only oil (of my own mix) during break in on all of my hand guns, 1911's included. It allows shiny wear spots to come in faster. Once everything feels smooth, I switch to grease on the high friction areas. It does not slow anything down and will definately help the weapon to keep its sweet spot, longer. You can feel the difference between oil and grease when you rack the slide. I have two pistols that I absolutely do not want any wear on and I use motorcycle chain lube on them, the kind that does not sling off the chain. It is a little harder to clean though, but I really don't have anything else to do.

    I use Hoppe's number 9...

...among others, I find it is a great lube that really cleans up easy too.

I like CLP, Slide Glide, and Moble 1 as well. But something about that ol' Hoppe's.

I've used about everything out there at one time or another, but for the past couple of years TW25B grease and SLIP EWL have worked great for 99% of our needs, whether 1911's, M&P's, AK's, AR's, or my wife's worthless small caliber pistols.

TW25B grease if they aren't going to be used for awhile, as in sitting in the safe. A blend of TW25B and SLIP EWL for EDC, and more Slip EWL or all EWL for long range sessions. The grease tends to dry out over time, so I add some EWL if the pistol has spent some months not being used. For a class, I'd just go with 100% EWL.

TW25B has worked great in dirty conditions, but EWL has outperformed it even in this area. Having said that, I have the oil version of the TW25B and some of the 10-8 stuff on hand also. The small vial of 10-8 goes on trips where space is at a premium. It goes on very wet, but tends to stay put in spite of this.

The truth is, there are tons of modern lubricants, most already named, that work great. You just have to pick which one you prefer. Ballilstol works great for anything that is going to be in a harsh environment for any length of time, though I don't think it is any way superior in the lube area. It just seems to protect the surface from rust in our humid climate here. Wiping the surface with the Sentry Solutions Marine Cloth is actually my first choice for this purpose. Even my old O1 (carbon) steel Randall's don't rust with this stuff on them, and it wears well too. Not a lube, but a great protectant. All our handguns and rifles get wiped off with this once they are cleaned and lubed.

My Wilson's get nothing but Wilson combat grease (whatever they call it) in the summer and Wilson combat oil (ultimalube me thinks) in the colder months. The grease tends to gum up in the cold.
