    I see it the other way around, why would you want a tube you have to mount rails on?

    Because not everyone wants or needs all the rail space a quad rail provides. The tubes allow you to place a section of rail where you want it/need it not where the manufacturer wants it. The smooth tubes are also lighter.

    FWIW I have never seen a rail section, that was properly installed, fall off of a tube. That includes hard use guns.

    It's funny how I thought the same way but when I put a JP/VTac 12" tube with a toprail and 2 2" rail sections on the bottom it was heavier than my Troy MRF-R (12") quad rail. But since the JP is on my Grendel now I'm not going to take it off.

    The KAC SR15E3 seems to show you can have quad rails and light weight in the same package.
