    Question Embarassing situation ... S&W 5.45 x 39 upper ...

    um,

    ah,

    err...

darn bcg and charging handle on my S&W 5.45 x 39 upper won't budge.

    tried mortaring it. no workie.

    sprayed lube into it, nada.

i tried opening it up this morning and as soon as i pulled it off the lower ... the firing pin popped out.

    retaining pin completely rusted through.

    i'm screwed, aren't i?

Are you saying the cotter pin to retain the firing pin rusted through, thus the firing pin came out and tied up your upper?

Um, buy a new cotter pin, replace, and keep shooting. Seems like an easy fix. I don't see how you are screwed, or am I missing something?

    1) separated upper from lower

    2) firing pin dropped out

    3) saw the retaining pin was rusted through

    4) bolt carrier group and charging handle will not budge.

my problem is that i cannot remove the bcg from the upper.

I know it's likely they are related, but I'm not sure what issue "A" (the rusted pin) has to do with issue "B" (the stuck BCG).

    Very odd.

Sounds like the bolt is still in the locked position. WD-40 the hell out of it, inside the BCG, through the port to the locking logs of the bolt and barrel extension, between the charging handle and the upper, everywhere you can spray. Then after it soaks for a while very gently, using a large brass punch and a hammer, start tapping the back inside of the BCG until the BCG starts sliding out. Sounds like more than a rusty firing pin retaining pin. Was corrosive ammo left chambered? Cleaned, but not lubed?

FTS, can you elaborate? I am always adding new tools/techniques to the box.
