The best base for nitriding is a CM barrel that has been broken in. What I mean by broken in is that it's had some rounds fired through it for burnishing and the resultant copper has been removed. Having said that, I've done a few with no pre-nitride rounds and they have exhibited very good accuracy. For a carbine application, sending a new CM barrel is the way to go. Variablebinary is dead on, can't send a chrome lined barrel. Let me check on 416SS. I know some folks have done that, but it actually makes the barrel more prone to rusting.

    edited to add:
As of November of '09 a test 6x44, 416SS barrel had 8640 rounds through and was still running in F Class competitions. If you look at the wear characteristics of that round, it's much more damaging that 5.56 or even 7.62.

Sorry to turn the thread into another "Nitriding" conversation..........

    FYI

The Troy CQB upper shoots tight. I've done one carbine class with it (600rds) . But....it took a while to zero.

I initally zeroed and after 2 ten round groups, ended with a 3" group in the 10 ring of a 25m NRA pistol tratget from 100 yds. Good to go..I thought. Next group was, and I'm not kidding, one foot low on the target. The group was still tight as hell, maybe 3.5".

So, I go into diagnostic mode. First, I quickly check tightness of my optic. Since I was running the new EXPS with it's built in mount, I assume that's the issue. Nope, tight. So naturally, it must be me. Shoot another 10 rd group, same place- one foot low but tight. Next, I check ammo, GTG-military grade good stuff.

So at this point I suspect barrel break in. It took approx. 60-75 rounds before it would hit in the same place. After that though, tack driver. Weird. This was common with our bolt guns in the Teams, but I've never experienced that with a carbine. Hope this helps.

If so, then this is a non issue for me.

ETA: I meant to say CL but put CHF. I don't know why.
KAC barrels are chrome lined. (That's CL for the spelling challenged.)

Some type of velocity change maybe? Does that Troy upper use a SS barrel?

This NiCorr treatment sounds very interesting.
I've been looking at the 13" troy handguards a bit lately, and this seems like a nice setup.

Interested to see how Mr. Defoor's shooting goes.

Kyle, is the Troy barrel as accurate (or more) than the KAC?
    We miss you, AC.
