    Remington 700 R5 vs 700 P model.

Trying to decide on getting a bolt .308. I sold my GAP AR10 because I needed to free up some funds but I have a ton of .308 ammo and a good Nightforce 5.5-22 power scope still. So I decided I want a bolt. I can't afford more than 1k right now on the rifle.

What is the major difference with the R5 vs the standard 700 P model? What kind of accuracy can I expect with each. Is the R5 worth the extra money? Thanks for your time.

Main difference is in the barrel. The 5r has the rifling found in the m24 (5 groove 1/11.25in twist) and it is a stainless barreled action. The 700p uses the 6groove 1/12in action and is parkerized. Both come with a HS precision stock and both seem to be pretty equal accuracy-wise.

What is the advantage of the barrel on the R5. (accuracy, barrel life?)

I have no first hand experience with the 5r but i believe the proposed advantage is accuracy. If another member knows more please chime in.

The advantage of the 5r is supposed to be more accuracy but in reality its mostly snake oil. Also supposed to need less cleaning. I would save some money and get the pss unless you want stainless. The 5r and pss will both be around 1/2MOA guns.

ETA- the twist is faster on the 5r but not enough to worry about unless you plan to push the limits of the 308.

    quotation by randall follows:
"There are stock 700pss that shoot well under 1/2 MOA, but it's rare to find a shooter that does it.
The main thing you would be buying in a 5R 700 is the likelyhood of a better barrel.
Note that these are NOT Rock 5R barrels.
They are still remington produced barrels, but they have the 5R rifling profile.
The main advantage (my opinion again) of the 5R barrel is that it's stainless and therefore easier to machine more consistently.
The difficulty of machining chromoly steel (due to variations in steel alloy) is what keeps every 700 from shooting as good as the stainless barreled variants." http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ad.php?t=98463

I have spent a fair amount of time on a 20" GAP 700 with 5R Rock. Accuracy was better than me or the 5 PSS's that I shot with. Big difference was in the FPS. My 20" shot the same FPS as the 26" factory PSS. Also much easier to clean.

    They are hammer forged.
