Virginia Drivers behave after July 1

Just saw a write up about your new civil remedial fines. Ouchy http://www.courts.state.va.us/publications/hb_3202.pdf. Gotta love the quote from the guy who wrote it. David B. Albo (R-Fairfax) says, "Hey, roads cost money -- and there's no road fairy."

These are beyond your fines and court costs. They also only apply to VA residents. WHich seems mighty messed up, fine the people who elected you, but not those who are driving through.

I think it will be short-lived. Someone will challenge it either on 8th Amendment grounds or on the grounds that it only applies to residents of VA. Or it will become an election year issue.
They had no right to win. Yet they did, and in doing so they changed the course of a war...even against the greatest of odds, there is something in the human spirit - a magic blend of skill, faith and valor - that can lift men from certain defeat to incredible victory.

Another good reason to privatize the roads.

Between this, the new local "transportation authority" implementing new fees to raise road money and increasing personal property and housing tax costs, I'm sick and damn tired of politicians reaching for my damned wallet. I'm a single engineer living in a paid off house, I shouldn't be friggin broke all the time. But every time I come into a bit of extra money, the state is there to take it away. I don't know people afford families and kids around here. It's gotten me frustrated enough to start thinking about moving, and I thought I'd never have a really good reason to leave VA.
    Principles matter.

Our cars are going to rust out in 5 years, so why not wreck them into one another?

    Thumbs down

I hope the bulk of the fees come from Democrats so they can reap the just rewards of their votes cast here in VA... (idiots!)

If I was better at math and financial research, I would love to see exactly how much we PAY IN TAXES and the percent to income with all things considered: income tax, sales tax, gas tax, property tax, tangible tax, food taxes, travel taxes, tolls, etc...

It has got to be 50% or more... What would our founding leaders do with that kind of tax from King George? Ha!

What would that get us but tollbooths? If the roads are privatized you will never get rid of them. I think it’s a damn shame our politicians cannot even think about funding a road without hitting taxpayers immediately.

It always makes he laugh then cry when I read politicians talk about adding tolls to raise funds for road construction. HELLO – The problem right now is TRAFFIC. Adding ANOTHER man made obstacle is only going to make matters worse for a very long time. After twenty years of road construction & tollbooths you end up with nothing but a very nice road that will be inadequate in less than ten years anyway. Not to mention the tollbooths will stay for twenty years or more after the road is completed. Hello – You’ve still got traffic but now it’s because of the tollbooths. Anybody who has driven on Florida’s turnpike or I-95 around Miami or Orlando can back me up on this.

In my opinion the Virginia state government and Virginia Department of Transportation have been nothing less than criminally negligent when it comes to Virginia’s highways (I-95, 295, I-64, ETC.). Virginia is an absolutely beautiful state but its highways are a mess. Traffic in the DC and Tidewater areas is mind-boggling. We need more lanes on I-64, I-95, ETC. Filling in potholes or repaving for cosmetics isn’t going to cut it AND just creates MORE traffic. Personally I think it’s too late to just add lanes to I-64. It is way past that stage. What we need is another completely separate East/West highway from Tidewater to at least Richmond using the Monitor Merrimac Tunnel to cross the water. Monitor Merrimac is under utilized now anyway. I personally don’t use it because all it does is dump me right back onto I-64 anyways. It does me no good.

There will be nothing but a bunch of suspended licenses. People either won't or can't pay the fines.

One thing I quickly noticed when I lived in Frankfurt, FRG was the highway system. They approach it from a different standpoint over there. The promote by design, free flowing traffic. The entrances and exit are designed very well. minimal lights and/or timed well. There's also mini autobans that assist you from the big ones to areas throughout the city. For instance in Va. Beach, Independence or Va. Beach Blvd. would be one vs a field of never ending lights and back up. Don't even get started on the piss poor public transportation here.
