How reliable are the S&W 1911's and do they generally hold up over the long haul?
I've been thinking about getting a 1911 but I'm not sure if I want to go with a box stock Smith or Colt, or possibly a Dan Wesson.
I just havn't heard much of anything regarding the Smith 1911's so that leaves me a little curious about em.
Swapped out the thumb safety for an Ed Brown slim(hate the word tactical) More positive "click".
#1 Sent back to S&W once, hammer would fall to half/notch if slide dropped on empty chamber( yes I know).
back in less than 2 weeks all under warranty..
coming up on 8 thousand rd. including reloads in 1 1/2 years.. No issue's since..
#2Because they're BORINGLY RELIABLE...
I would read all that you can here: www.10-8performance.com
It depends on what the intended use of the pistol is.
Only hits count......you can not miss fast enough to catch up
For the $$$, considered some of the more reliable 1911s out of the box. I have had 3, all were GTG. However, they have external extractors and internal "schwart-like" internal safety. The former bothers 1911 purists but is not a negative per se on function (according to Yam et al), the later makes them not acceptable for duty/hard use for some.

tell me more about the "Schwart like" safety, it's purpose, advantages and disadvantages.
Depends on who you ask. Some are in favor of them (as long as the design is robust) and some will not use any 1911 with them. They are designed to prevent the firing pin from moving unless trigger is pulled. Colt had the series 80 safety. S&W seems to use something of their own design that is "Schwart like" but not identical. Unlike Kimber, S&Ws internal safety has been very reliable.
On a 1911 without them, if you drop it barrel down at the right angle from a high enough distance, the mass of the firing pin is enough to make it strike the primer, and boom. Rare, but it has happened.
Springfield has solved the problem in an uber simple way: titanium pin with stiffer spring, no boom when gun is dropped straight down on the barrel from X height, which make purists happy with improved safety without adding additional parts that could fail.
I'm not a gun smith or engineer, so that's getting to the limits of my knowledge on that topic.
Read articles by Yam et al for much more details and far greater depth of knowledge.
