I'll add 'trigger jobs' to the mix.

This week @ Magpul Dynamic Carbine, had one start doubling, another went full auto. Only had the parts to fix the first one. 2 bad (very worn) extractors as well, both in .mil Colt M4s. But these guys were Air Force ERT (SWAT) guys with very high round counts. One guys sling failed (improperly setup) and we had a couple of hobbyist guns that ran sporadically, never looked at them closely, so no idea what was happening over there.

There is no hard and fast rule. I say that when it is properly assembled if you can easily push down on the rear of the extractor or it feels "spongy" it's probably time to replace it. The lip of the extractor should also be fairly sharp. If it feels rounded, replace it.

Maintaining a round count is also not a bad idea. If you do that then you can say I replace the spring and insert at 5K or xxxxK.

For the extractor itself you're looking for two sharp teeth at the ends. For the spring itself comparison to a known good spring and checking for length works.

Alternately you can pick a replacement interval, keep track of your rounds, and replace pre-emptively. I think 5k rounds is a good mark for an extractor & spring, less perhaps if you're using steel-cased ammo.

The Disconnector has always been a sheet steel stamping. The Hammer and Trigger are also castings.
My brother saw Deliverance and bought a Bow. I saw Deliverance and bought an AR-15.

    .....with very high round counts.
A round counter will be a feature of the successor to the M16/M4.

Assuming my mags aren't worn and the ammo is solid, I keep an eye on the bolt assembly and FCG more than anything else.

I've seen many a worn FCG take a shooter off the line.

Just today while shooting the M4 at a large facility near Moyock, NC one of the Bushamsters had an issue with the "J" spring. The guys hammer pin kept walking loose every mag or so.
