Red Dot Sights - if Green is so good...

Green seems to be the preferred reticle color over red in the Accupoint TR 21 and 24. some folks stick with Amber...

but if Green is so good, why don't any of the Red Dot sight companies switch to green, or at least offer it as an option?

Good question. Several companies used to offer reflex tube sights with different color dots. Adco was one that comes to mind.

I think it has something to do with power consumption for a green dot, can't remember where I saw it though. Tag, until I can get the source.

I believe in theory Red obscures a target in low light conditions whereas I think the Green on a very sunny blue bird day becomes hard to pick up or at least not nearly as fast....and so red is a better choice for daylight shooting and green is a better choice for lower light conditions.

That said, I personally own a Amber triangle w. post accupoint

damnit! you had to go and do that didn't ya?

now I'm thinking I might go ahead and get one of those Vortex Strikefire sights that has both Red and Green 4min. dots and a 2x screw in doubler to see for myself before I spend the cash for an Accupoint.

it wouldn't be a loss as I could always put it on my .22 training rifle that I'll have to buy if I have an extra optic laying around...

I don't know. scanning the features for the Vortex Strikefire that has both red and green reticles, it gives longer battery life when the green dot is used.

but what do they know? they were probably made in China and everyone knows that on the bottom of the world and upside down...

Funny you bring up .22s as I have put several cheap optics like tasco propoints and centerpoint dual ill. rets scopes w. red/grn on numerous 10/22s, and I can say for certain that I prefer to use the 1x optics w. a grn. dot....but on the powered scopes the illumination sucks so badly that I cannot even really gauge which is better.

On a future accupoint for yourself.....I honestly believe that at the end of the day red, green or amber are all obviously good options and I do not believe in the....my eyes just cannot see red...unless somebody is actually color blind. The grass is always greener always plays into this mind pondering topic. I found a steal on a nib tr21 a few yrs back and the last color I would have wanted would have been Amber....clearly it did not weigh enough for me not to take home a fantastic new piece of glass w. amber triangle

It's a rod/cone/color vision thing. Theoretically red is easier to see in daylight. Green is easier to see at night. Amber is somewhere between the two. Differences between them are so negligible as to be absurd.

You put all three in day/low/nightlight situation ask 100 different people which they see better and you'll get and you'll come up with normal distribution. Absent objective testing and you'll hear that people say the "best" is whatever they spent their money on (shocking). Green was the answer of choice when Trijicon started coming out with the color about a year ago but you'll notice Aimpoint has been using Red (as you point out every other RDS manufacturer has used them for decades) without any ill effect.

The only time it will really matter is green would be a bad choice if you're going to be using night vision.

Having tested (by taping different color fiber on a bench and walking back about 50 yards...then walking towards them until my eyes pick one of them up) all three myself, red is generally the easiest to pick up first. YMMV.

this makes sense. I have an M&P Pro with green fiber optic front sight and it really doesn't stand out that much in bright daylight. this was against the buff colored IDPA targets.

I recently broke the light fiber tube and have been thinking about replacing it with a red as I tried another shooters gun with a red FO sight and it is very visible. much more so than the green.

although, I might be comparing apples to handgrenades as my original question was about the illuminated reticle in the Trigicon TR24 1-4 scope...

Not sure that's a great idea. I watched one of those little gems go tits-up after an hour of hard use last weekend in a Magpul class. It became a two then a four-dot red/green sight.
