Rob, any particular reason you didn't mount the light on the gun?
738 rounds current count, 35 Brown Bear 62 gr HP and the balance XM193. All fired with iron sights, 643 fired at a 3-day Randy Cain carbine course with lube applied each morning before class. Zero malfunctions to date, and the upper now has a good solid 200 yard confirmed zero (none of this "I zeroed at 50 so I'm good at 200" bullshit) with the Troy fixed rear iron sight. I experienced no issues with the Troy other than it coming loos slightly on TD2 which was rectified by torquing the hell out of it and which would be permanently rectified with red loctite if this was my personal gun. Additionally I would remove the front swivel if this were my own gun.
I used the Blue Force Gear UWL 3.25 over the A2 handguards as the front sling attachment point, and looped the other end of the BFG Victory Sling through the ejection-port-side of the M4 stock.
I used a handheld Surefire Z2-style light for the nigh-shoot portion and utilized the method of light activation wherein the light is held between the booger-picker and the social finger and pressed back against the magwell. IIRC we engaged out to about 20 yards this way and I had no issues to speak of other than fatigue and that sling swivel slightly obscuring the throw from the light.
We have a CQB drills night coming up this coming Tuesday where I'll use the carbine again to shoot, among other things, the Vtac 1-5 drill. Following that, in December, we'll have a long-range drills night where I'll again use it to engage targets out to 130+ yards in an unknown-distance format.
The reason I requested the upper from BCM was because I am writing an article on "getting back to basics" and taking Cain's Carbine 1 course with the most basic rifle I can. This means no WML, but instead using it hand-held. This is the same reason I kept the M4 stock, used the A2 handguards, etc. The only modifications were the MOE grip and trigger guard (to fill the gap and eliminate the finger groove on the A2) and the drop in Geisselle SSA trigger to get every advantage I could because I knew we'd be shooting to 200 yards. In hindsight I don't think the trigger helped me at all and I wish I had kept the GI trigger.
Some have noted the irony of my having no interest in the upper at the beginning of the thread but then winding up with one by the end. I still stand by my earlier statements, and having now used the configuration I am in fact more adamant about some of my initial objections (such as the weight, and distribution thereof). However, for the intent of the article I think it was a fantastic solution, and would recommend the configuration to anyone else looking to make extensive use of iron sights. In the case of a less-expensive package to keep in a car, I think this barrel configuration with an A2 upper, or even better an A1, would be a great setup. Even with the flattop where an optic could be dropped on as needed, I think it would shine in that application.

Colt is the only company I've seen with an A2 upper recently that I would consider owning. I would like to see BCM offer an A2 or A1 upper.

Rob... Do you have any more pics of the beast?
A Dissy middie would solve all my conundrums. I want a middie with 11-12 handguards and an FSB with a non-pencil barrel. If BCM doesn't build it I am going to.
I see lots of arguments on reasons. Heck we all have individual needs and wants in an AR. I like 11-12 handguards the way I run the gun. I prefer an FSB for strength. I prefer an FSB as an index for unconventional shooting positions to gauge changes between POA & POI. I also need (for my eyes) to properly utilize irons a longer sight radius. A quality middie Dissy would definitely fill a niche. IMHO. I want one![]()
