Besides the Colt type, what other optics are good for the carry handle....preferably with the integral screw mount. I was thinking a 1.5x Compact Acog with the carry handle mount. Are there any 1x RDS types that are like the colt 3x?

I put a Trijicon Compact ACOG TA-44R on my dad's Colt 6520, and it works pretty decently.
Not ideal, no, but if you're locked into a carry handle and you don't want to go with a gooseneck mount that puts an Aimpoint over the handguard, it's probably the best, although most expensive, option.
The other thing to do is get an ARMS #2 mount and throw an Aimpoint on there. ARMS M16A1/A2 mount
Either one is going to be better than the old school Colt scopes.

I've got the ARMS mount on one of my ARs and it works great. They've got them at SWFA.com for around $70.00.
+2 on the compact ACOG:
+3 on the compact ACOG
they're expensive but built like a tank and fit great on a carry handle....as low as possible with a good eye relief

The Armory:
Colt 6601 - Colt 6731 - Colt 613 - Steyr StG.58 - M1 Carbine - Galil SAR - CZ Scorpion EVO - Franchi PA8 - Glock 17 - Pietta/Colt SAA 1873 - SA 1911A1 Mil Spec - Ruger LCP
If your gonna go retro, go all the way.
The original RDS, Armson OEG.
I swam, jumped, flogged, the crap out of one in the early 90's (pre aimpoint), & made a bunch of iron sight dinosaurs look silly on movers & night shoots.
As Dano mentioned, if you want truly old school, the Armson is it.
Still available apparently.....

Look around for a Single Point like those used by the Son Tay Raiders on their GAUs.

wow, I didn't know the singlepoints are still around. I'm liking the modern version of the OEG, maybe that would be a good one for the XM clone and maybe a TA44 for the A1 clone.
Here are my retros that need some optics:
