Welcome to the madhouse...
I work in D.C. as well, for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), more commonly just called "The World Bank". I live in Lorton, VA, and commute in.
Have you lined up housing yet? Home prices in the Metro area suck.
VA or MD? VA has significantly better firearm laws than MD does.

$85k is not bad for this area - factor in your wife's salary and you're in decent shape. housing does suck, and unlike say Florida where you could push out 20 or more miles and get a nice place and have a still decent commute, anything over 10 miles from your job in this area can become a 1 to 2 hour commute. You're not obligated to live in DC, so obviously VA is the best choice if you're a gun owner and wish to carry conceal in your "off-duty" life. Arlington and Alexandria are expensive. Figure high $400's for a three bedroom condo, mid $500's for a three bedroom townhouse. The market has cooled considerably so the same $500k can net you a pretty decent townhouse or even a single family if you're willing to deal with the commute. Springfield may be an option, but traffic is a mess on I95 in the mornings and evenings. Arlington is probably your shortest commute if you decide to live in VA. Woodbridge and points further south (like Fredericksburg) have nice homes, but the commute sucks and you'll likely have to join up with some sort of car/van pool for it to make sense. Points west like Reston, Herndon and out in Chantilly, Sterling, Leesburg and South Riding have decent prices going on new construction, but again...traffic. 495 is brutal mornings and evenings. It can be done though, and the area definitely has the best job opportunities for anyone with a S, TS, or TS/SCI clearance.
