When Colt released their 7.62x39mm carbine in the late 80's/early 90's, it came with two 20 rd. AR mags with a follower for 7.62x39mm.

You could put 8 rounds of 7.62x39mm in them before you had serious reliability issues.

If you want a 7.62x39mm AR (for whatever reason), that works reliably, try to find a KAC SR-47.

Otherwise, buy a 6.8mm SPC, or 6.5mm Grendel.

Thanks for the information, Templar. I was wondering why the mag companies didn't just reduce the round count. It makes sense now.

I had high hopes for my Colt 7.62x39 back then but was nothing but a headache and money wasted. Sold it to a buddy after much frustration, he knew the issues but just wanted it for hunting and didn't mind the 5 rounds. He still has it and has killed many a deer and some pigs with it.

Yep, pretty much. One exception being the AK & 5.56 or .223

Interesting 'Only seven rifles are known to exist. Six went to USSOCOM and one was retained in the Knight Co. museum.'

Now that has to be a collector's item $$$$

If only Magpul wouldn't have Bushmaster'd the Masada. I had really high hopes for the 7.62x39 variant that used AK mags I kept hearing about...

I found that slight extending the feedramps on my 7.62x39 AR helps a bunch. I can actually load my 25rd Grendel mags with 20rds of x39 and it works fine. If you use a dremel with a green grinding "cone" and make the ramps a little deeper, perhaps 1mm, it'll help significantly. Also you can order stronger springs by Wolff for the mags. 5% stronger and they'll make a difference when loading the CProd mags. Note that the CP mags are listed as 30rd mags, but in practice they really stop at 28-29rds but loading them to 25 makes a difference in reliability.

    Check out MGI Military's "Hydra"

MGI has an AR lower with interchangeable mag wells.
There is a version that can accommodate AK mags.

I have a Special Weapons lower which takes AK mags.

That is only part of the problem. The other is that the bolts don't last. Full auto, suppressed, 10 inch - I was getting 200 rounds per bolts. A longer barrel without a suppressor - might last much longer but I would never trust it for serious use.

7.62x39 did not work out for me.

I also have a Colt but never used it much.
