    5.45 surp and steel targets.

What are the considerations when shooting steel targets with 5.45 surp? Ive got a 500 brinell steel silhouette Id like to use for training and was wondering if it would be safe to use the steel core rounds and at what range.

I shoot lots of steel with 5.56 and 7.62 using FMJ ammo and I don't shoot them closer than 200 yards for safety reason and to save wear and tear on the targets. Angled targets are said to be safe but they still crater at close range so I still use paper or cardboard inside of 200 yards. I do not use armor piercing or steel core ammo on my steel.

I have a 100% size IPSC silhouette made from 3/8 inch AR500 steel. It is fine to shoot with XM193 5.56 as close as 75 yards, but with 5.45 steel core at that range it gets dimples. Probably the 5.45 would be ok at 150 yards or more.

Make sure you do not use it at a match or you might be buying new plates for someone
