Violent Home Invasion - Best Plan?

In another thread here, StoneBridge posted some good information about how bad guys are starting to switch their tactics, going to a more aggressive and violent home invasion style. I know there are many examples of this style of home invasion that have occurred throughout the country.

I don't know how to embed video, but here is a quick video from Arizona that shows a thwarted violent home invasion. Note the weapons used, and how fast they are at the door.

This brings up a question though. How do you defend against a home invasion like this? When I am home, I have my 1911 on my hip, but my carbine and shotgun are locked up in the safe.

What can the average person, either a home owner or a person renting a home, do to prevent/deter/repel a home invasion like the above?

Deter is possible and GTFO if it happens are still preferable. Everything else has been discussed to death.

Well aside from the fact that you can read through the various threads here and get some information. There is more to that story. The person was actually targeted and IIRC they suspect that he was involved in something.

In fact many of the scenarios that have occured in Phoenix metro area are related to either drugs, human smuggling or some gang connection. Very rarely have they been innocent bystanders.

I personally keep my carbine handy. There are only adults and a 16 year old in my house and he is trained. So I am not worried about a little 4 year old shooting themselves.

My long guns are locked up too. I have access to a few pistols. I have three small children at home. ATTACK THE ATTACKER.

I think the only plan you can come up with is to stay armed (on body) and avoid loitering within line of sight to the front door. I am interested in hearing a professional opinion on this too.

Wear your CCW while inside your home instead of ditching it as soon as you walk in the door.

    Deterrence. Have a dog.

It doesn't have to big German Shepherd...but a medium sized dog that barks.

    Stay armed.

    Dog and alarm, CCW.

    A dog does a lot.

The alarm is a good idea and I'd recommend the dog too. Alarms can run out of juice but a good dogs tend to stay wired. If you develop a bond with the dog, you can also start to tell why he's barking. You know when he barks because the wife just arrived or he barks because strangers are about.

Keep some gear on you at all times. The pistol is important but I'm never without a light and a phone. The small flashlights are very handy for this purpose and phones are thin enough to keep in your pockets all day long.

Made your home a hard target. Good doors and locks all around.

Motion lighting around the exterior, trim those hedges.

Make your home a loud target. Dogs and alarms. Your dog doesn't have to be a "killer". One of those "yapper" dogs will let you know.

Make a safe room with solid core doors and real locks. Keep cell phone and an AR in that room.

    CCW at home.

Have a plan. Practice that plan with your family.

Speed, Surprise, and Violence of Action has served units like SWAT for years. This is basically the same principle many of these home invasion suspects are using. Try to find a way to remove the "Speed and Surprise" portion from their equation. IF that doesn't stop them, then you have to try to find a way to remove them from their equation.

In my area violent home invasion's are on the rise. But they are almost always related to some type of criminal activity. So much so that our procedure requires we notify our Vice unit to respond to determine if the victim is involved in the regional drug trade in some fashion. If not directly related, it's usually someone's "babies momma" that "baby daddy" was stashing either drugs or money at her house.
