Bottom line is Remington screwed the pooch on the 6.8spc and are to proud to admit they did. So instead of fixing it they came up with a new round. That's my take on the whole thing. The 6.8 is a very efficient sbr round. If they would have stuck to the original Murray specs of the 6.8 and not used winchester 270 barrel blanks all would be good.

Folks this is NOT a "new" cartridge nor does it have anything to do with the abysmal .30RAR; it is simply a refinement of the proven 300 Whisper/300 Fireball as noted above. Nor do I see this competing with either 6x35mm or 6.8mm--each does different tasks very well.

I have to admit... the knowledge on this board astounds and humbles me. This is a great place to hang and learn.

Can I ask what went wrong with the 30 Rem AR? On paper it looks ok, although I have never actually seen a rifle chambered for it.

I stand corrected, thank you for clarifying. I will jump back in my lane now

What exactly is better about .300 BLK over .300 Fireball?

The fact it's a standardized, SAAMI round. .300 Whisper/Fireball/etc are Wildcats and widely unstandardized; having no defined presets for powder, bullet weight, etc, and no readily/commerically-available brass. If the .300 BLK succeeds, it will set the standard for the platform.

IMHO, another entry is good...it shows strength and health in the AR market.

I think the 6.8 SPC w/ Spec II chamber, 1:11 or 1:12 twist barrel with 4 or even 3 groove rifling...and you're talking about a different cartridge from the original SPC that Rem debuted. SSA has seen ~2700 FPS with a 110gr accubond from a 16" barrel using the above setup. That's f*cking amazing and worth exploring. Problem is, most 6.8 is damn anemic and is only marginally better than 5.56.

AND, many new rifles are still using the SAAMI 6.8 chamber, over-fast rifle twist, and 6 groove rifling (read: too much friction on the bullet in the barrel). They can only use the sh*tty ammo that often fails to compare to 7.62x39mm in power (if not accuracy). Std 6.8 ammo (i.e. SAAMI spec) is a waste of brass and a step backward.

Same reason that a 5.56 NATO chamber allows MUCH improved performance in a std AR platform.

As for the .300.....more power to 'em. Keep innovating and keep trying to make it better. That's advancing the art. That's what we're about here on M4C.

Now, we may be considering 6.8- .30 (7.62) - slower, bigger

Does it sound like a circle?

I think the idea is doomed, only because Remington is involved. By my reckoning the last good idea they had was 44 Remington magnum. Some of their more recent, really stupid ideas are 8mm Remington magnum and 416 Remington magnum.
