I was fortunate to spend some time at a range complex outside of Ft Bliss this summer where we were temporarily co-located with a couple platoons of SEALs and an ODA that were apparently doing pre-deployment work-ups.

Almost every SEAL (when they weren't sun-bathing wearing white Oakleys on top of a Conex) I saw was carrying a CQBR with the DD rail, all on Colt Lowers. Optics were a mix of Elcans and Eotech 553s, and most had Magpul CTRs on them. I did not to see a single SOPMOD stock among them. (I'm guessing they unit purchased a bunch of CTRs)

I didn't want to go full-out E-4 leg-humper.... but I was also surprised to see a few of them rocking AAC M2000s along with their KAC NT4s. I wanted to get some pics... but decided against it.

The ODA guys (when not Austrian repelling off the water tower) were carrying a mix of Block 1 M4s, KAC M110s and CQBRs. Most of them had ACOGS and were using normal M4 stocks or black SOPMODS.

The ODA was asked not to come back to that particular range complex after they got bored one afternoon and stacked a half dozen claymores and a bunch of demo in a pile... heard the explosion even over our 105's and the Paladins that 1AD were shooting over our heads. Range control went out of their minds.

Something I havent done is a range report on my DD MK18, This pic was taken around the 4,000 round mark and here I had a session where I put 800 rounds of 55gr Wolf ammo through it in just over an hour. I lubed the BCG up before shooting with 5w-30 synthetic motor oil. I had 3 FTE's from bent case rims which is completely ammo related, but they did require a rod to remove. I eventually broke the bolt around the 6-7,000 mark but this gun was over gassed as well.

I put 3 drops of oil on each rail, 4 in the cam pin slot, and 2 drops in the exhaust vents to get it on the gas rings.

Gas port was .083", from what I am told they are now making them with a .075" which will be even better. Anyways some after action pics.

Overall the gun ran great and was way to hot to hold at the end even with gloves, I was rocking a mag well grip near the end. But MY GOD was the Wolf ammo dirty, and I could tell the extra blowback you get from it not oburating properly.

What cans do the MK18s get used with? All the pics seem to suggest KAC.

A few recent 10.3" barrels that people have received measured .075"

Another thing to note about my post is how dirty the rifle is, its the only thing I hate about the DI system. Took me like 20 minutes to get that rifle clean after that outing.

Your bolt is like that because you're not lubing the weapon enough. Not sure why you chose to lube it with a few drops here and there, but you really need to lube it.

I find the bolt breakage interesting. My BCM bolt has over 11K rounds on it and all I have replaced is the ejector spring. I run this thing suppressed about 60% of the time and use M855, M193, PMC Bronze, PPU M193 and SS109, and Hornady Steel TAP.

It was still a PITA to clean lol, I hate cleaning guns and that was one nasty gun for not using a suppressor.

I only did a few drops to test how it ran with minimal lubrication, it did well and since my life was not dependent on it running it didn't matter, I figured the early bolt breakage was due to the .083 gas port. From what I am told 7-8K is also about average for a bolt in the MK18.

My LMT 10.5" rifles have both been great. Combined, they saw about 12,000 rounds with no failures other than a lightly cracked Colt bolt. When I switched to the Vltor A5, I could run all types of ammo, suppressed or not, and saw/felt little difference.

I'll likely move to an 11.5" next, but I have a soft spot for the 10.5". Mine got wiped down every now and then and cleaned every 1,000 rounds, which is a very rough estimate. Kept them lubed and had no problems.
Proven combat techniques may not be flashy and may require a bit more physical effort on the part of the shooter. Further, they may not win competition matches, but they will help ensure your survival in a shooting or gunfight on the street. ~ Paul Howe

I should have mentioned it was in an 11.5 upper that sees alot of suppressor action.
