your new price range is much more reasonable, but your timeline (this xmas) is very short for a custom made knife. i'd forget about making xmas the goal, and just find what you really want instead of rushing the process. if you decide what you want and place your order before xmas, you can always give them a card as a placeholder, with the knife's description/specs etc, so they have something to look forward to eagerly when the knives are finally delivered.

ordering a custom knife is like having a 1911 worked on - don't do it if you're in a hurry. but it's usually worth the wait.

Here is my suggestion for a nice package you could gift:

ESEE RC-4 $83
Ray Fire Kit $25
RC-4 Weatherproof Field Sheath $55

CDH, nice set up. Do you have a pic with the fire starter. Made me want to take that plunge.

Wow, I've seen the Rat Fire steel in person today. It sure is neat but BIG! I don't think it would fit into the holder in the above listed sheath but a regular swedish fire steel should.

Thanks for posting the link. I have spent the last two hours looking over all the knife makers on the site.

I would seriously consider a Surefire Echo knife

More of a semi custom knife. I have wanted to get one for years. The Midway price is outstanding. They usually sell for about $275--300

Also, send Grant an email. He has a good discount on Surefire products.

Not sure if you're still looking into this, but my father makes custom knives. When he came back from Vietnam, he apprenticed with Ralph Abbott and they made their living traveling the gun/knife shows. He is an accomplished machinist but still plays with knifecraft on the side as a hobby.
I learned from him and made them for 4 yrs (selling as far as Australia), but am currently in military training. If you are interested, send me a private message and I can try to talk to him for you.

Thanks for mentioning my work guys!! I will have some knives at the beginning of June as I am sure I'll have leftovers from the bladeshow in June. If you would like me to let you know what I have I can email you. Email me at blgoode@bellsouth.net to get on that list if you would like.

I can also let Jonathan Mcnees know you want something from him. HE sits behind me for 3 days during that show Good looking knives from him also

Brian, if you don't mind me asking, how much does the Companion normally run? I really like the look of the one with the black micarta your site pictured with the LMT. The Personal would look really sharp with the same grip as well.

I'm in the market for a nice blade myself to take with me if we end up deploying in a year. Something not too huge but large enough for most tasks, I'm thinking 3 to 5 inch blade and not as bulky or heavy as the Gerber LMF II.
