Thanks for all of the input. Problem solved. I got the rifle back and did a thorough FCG check. Disconnector spring wasn't properly seated. Took it out, installed a new one. Weapon function checks well. I'll take it and shoot it on Saturday but I believe everything will be fine.

What is "so ****ed up"? That a moron installed an M16 fire control group in his weapon and then knowingly let someone take it to the range even after it fired in full auto?

You do understand that an auto sear is not required to make the gun shoot more than one round right?

When you test fire the gun only load the mag with a couple of rounds. I have seen guns where the disconnector would function check correctly, but during normal cycling under fire, when the bolt slams home, the force bounces the disconnector and releases the hammer while the trigger is still held to the rear. This will cause the malfunction you have described.

Another test is to take the upper off, pull the trigger and catch the hammer as it releases (do not let it strike the lower receiver.) Then with the trigger held to the rear cock the hammer so it is held back by the disconnector. Once the disconnector is holding the hammer to the rear grab the hammer and try to pull it off the disconnector. You should not be able to.

    Oh... Well...

    Statement retracted.

I was under the impression that it was a malfunction.

Until IG's post, I had no idea this guy was sent to prison for an alleged "malfunction." Only after doing an hours worth of searching and reading was I able to discover he had indeed installed 4 of 5 auto FCG parts. I was just amazed how much garbage I had to filter through, just to find that information.
