    SR-15 crowning?

I just shipped off my SR-15 to have a new KAC muzzle brake pinned on. (after getting some opinions on here.....)

I was wondering, should I have them crown the barrel while they have it? Anyone think it would appreciably add to the accuracy? I fully understand it's a combat type carbine and not a precision rifle, but if $25 more would help a little it seems like it'd be worth doing while it was there.

I've never had it done before so I wanted to hear from some more experienced folk.

Pinned? DId you have it cut down to 14.5? If you sent it out to get cut down and a 2.1 inch brake pinned, then ya I guess you could spend a bit more and get the crown of your choice. Otherwise, just leave it alone. What crown do you have in mind?

No, I just live in NJ so all brakes have to be pinned....

And I'm not really sure what type of crown..... I just bought a LMT MWS that is crowned which is supposed to help with accuracy. I'm new to the idea so any opinions are welcome.

The upper is currently being whisked to ADCO and I saw someone mention crowning in another thread today which lead to my question. Pardon my lack of knowledge in the area in advance!

If you had the barrel cut down/shortened, I would highly recommend having the barrel re-crowned (maybe even with a target crown). If the original crown has not been disturbed (i.e. you're just having a new muzzle device placed on the gun), then I would leave the original crown intact.

Your barrel is already crowned from the factory. The only time you should get your barrel recrowned is if you damage it or you have your barrel cut down.

Not necessarily, my SR15 E3 looks like it was just cut to length on a lathe with no noticeable crown to speak of. It still shoots very well, but I have wondered how good it could be with a better crown.

Question for the OP, is ADCO disassembling your SR15 upper? Last time I checked with them, they did not have the tools necessary to disassemble / reassemble URX rails.

That's a good question though, I actually thought about that last night myself. I'll send an email to check and see, just out of curiosity.

As a matter of fact I think it was one of your posts that made me think about crowning in the first place!

you got a SR15 and a LMT MWS, and you line in NJ? Man, you should be my new best friend! lol

Either way, I can't imagine the bbl being just cut to length from KAC without being crowned. Take a look, if its not you may as well have Adco do it. Depending on the brake you go with the crown might be exposed, eg. Battlecomp 1.5.

I don't think they need to take off the handguard to pin the brake on. I do not plan on taking my rail off when I weld the BC1.5 on my new build. There is enough are to ground the muzzle device and put a small spot weld over the pin without having to dissasemble anything.

Trust me, mine looks like it was just cut clean off. It has machine marks on the face of the muzzle and is cut completely perpendicular to the bore. It will still shoot under 1.25 moa though.

The pin & weld job won't require disassembly, but if he wants it crowned, they will have to put the barrel in a lathe.

I'm going to have mine target crowned.

Being that the URX is no longer on my SR-15 (16.1'') it shouldn't be a problem when I have ADCO cut it to 14.5''.

My SR-15 barrel looks a bit cleaner than other ones I've seen, but still doesn't have an amazing crown, I don't see any machining marks or anything.
    We miss you, AC.
